Restaurant 212 is an intimate fine dining restaurant in Amsterdam known for its creative tasting menus and exceptional wine pairings. Chef Richard van Oosterhout crafts innovative dishes that blend classical French techniques with modern sensibilities.
Located along Amsterdam’s iconic Amstel River, Restaurant 212 stands as one of the city’s most innovative fine dining destinations. This two Michelin star restaurant revolutionizes the traditional dining experience with its unique open kitchen concept, where twenty-four counter seats surround the culinary theater.
Chef duo Richard van Oostenbrugge and Thomas Groot, who previously earned two Michelin stars at Restaurant Bord’eau, have created something extraordinary here. After a devastating fire in 2020, they rebuilt Restaurant 212 from the ground up, reopening in December 2022 with an even more ambitious vision.
What sets Restaurant 212 apart is its theatrical dining format. You won’t find traditional tables here – instead, guests sit at a sophisticated counter that wraps around the open kitchen, creating an intimate connection between diners and chefs. This immersive experience transforms your meal into a live culinary performance.
The restaurant’s location at Amstel 212, directly opposite the National Opera building, adds cultural sophistication to your evening. The venue combines luxury with approachability, offering a more dynamic and creative cooking style than ever before.
Revolutionary Open Kitchen Design
Restaurant 212’s most distinctive feature is its complete elimination of traditional dining tables. The innovative U-shaped counter seating arrangement places you directly at the heart of the culinary action, offering unparalleled views of the chefs’ meticulous work.
Two Michelin Star Excellence
Recognized by the MICHELIN Guide Netherlands with two stars, Restaurant 212 represents the pinnacle of Amsterdam’s fine dining scene. The restaurant has maintained its stellar reputation even after reconstruction, with some critics suggesting it’s worthy of a third star.
Dynamic Seasonal Menu
The constantly evolving menu showcases both Dutch ingredients and international products, reflecting the chefs’ commitment to creativity and seasonal excellence. Each dish demonstrates technical precision and innovative flavor combinations.
Intimate Dining Experience
With only thirty seats total – twenty-four at the counter and one table for six – Restaurant 212 offers an exclusive, intimate atmosphere. The limited capacity ensures personalized attention and creates a sense of being part of something special.
Exceptional Wine Program
The restaurant features an extensive, carefully curated wine list alongside expertly crafted non-alcoholic pairings, ensuring every guest can enjoy complementary beverages regardless of preference.
Evening Service for the Full Experience
Restaurant 212 serves dinner Tuesday through Saturday from 18:30 to 21:00. Evening dining provides the complete theatrical experience, with the open kitchen operating at full capacity and the dining room’s energy at its peak.
Lunch Service Options
The restaurant also offers lunch service on Fridays and Saturdays from 12:00 to 13:30. Lunch provides a more relaxed atmosphere with excellent natural lighting streaming through the riverside windows.
Seasonal Considerations
Spring and early autumn offer ideal visiting conditions, with mild weather perfect for pre-dinner walks along the Amstel River. The seasonal menu changes highlight the best available ingredients throughout the year.
Advance Reservations Essential
Due to extremely high demand and limited seating, reservations are required at least one month in advance, especially during peak tourist season from June through August. Special occasions should be mentioned when booking for personalized touches.
Walking from City Center
Restaurant 212 is approximately 15 minutes walking from Dam Square. Head southeast toward the Amstel River, following the scenic route along Amsterdam’s historic canals. The restaurant is clearly marked at Amstel 212, directly opposite the National Opera building.
Public Transportation
Metro: Take lines 51, 53, or 54 to Weesperplein station, then walk 5 minutes to the restaurant.
Tram: Lines 1, 7, and 19 stop at Frederiksplein, requiring a short walk. From Amsterdam Centraal, take tram 4 or 14 to Rembrandtplein, then walk 5 minutes.
Cycling
Secure bike parking is available near the restaurant. Amsterdam’s excellent cycling infrastructure makes this a convenient option for getting around the city.
Driving and Parking
Due to limited and expensive parking in central Amsterdam, we recommend using P+R facilities outside the city center and taking public transport. If driving is necessary, nearby paid parking areas are available but should be arranged in advance.
Taxi and Ride-sharing
When booking transportation, specify “Restaurant 212 on the Amstel” to avoid confusion with similarly named establishments elsewhere in the city.
