On the corner of Javastraat and Sumatrastraat, where the multicultural pulse of Amsterdam’s Indische Buurt beats strongest, Bar Basquiat stands as a colorful beacon for locals and curious travelers alike. Named after Jean-Michel Basquiat—the Brooklyn-born neo-expressionist who rose from graffiti artist to art world sensation in 1980s New York—this all-day café and bar channels the raw energy and creative spirit of its namesake into every aspect of the experience.
The moment you step inside, the connection becomes clear. Bold murals and graphic details adorn the walls, paying homage to Basquiat’s distinctive style: the crowns, the expressive brushstrokes, the fusion of high art and street culture. It’s an interior that demands attention without trying too hard—much like the artist himself.
Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960–1988) began his artistic journey spray-painting enigmatic phrases on Lower Manhattan buildings under the tag SAMO. Within a few short years, he transformed from sleeping on New York City streets to collaborating with Andy Warhol and commanding gallery prices that rivaled established masters. His work explored themes of race, identity, and power through a visual language of symbols, text, and vivid color that bridged graffiti and fine art.
Basquiat’s three-pointed crown—representing, as artist Francesco Clemente suggested, “the poet, the musician, the great boxing champion”—became his signature motif. That same spirit of creative rebellion and cultural fusion defines Bar Basquiat’s atmosphere: a place where boundaries blur between café and bar, breakfast and dinner, local hangout and destination.
The bar was established by the entrepreneurs affectionately known in Amsterdam Oost as “the three wise men from the east,” the same team behind neighborhood favorites Bar Bukowski, De Biertuin, and Louie Louie. Their track record explains why Bar Basquiat has become such a fixture on a street already known for its eclectic dining scene.
Bar Basquiat operates as a true all-day venue, welcoming guests from morning until late night, seven days a week. The menu reflects this versatility, evolving from breakfast dishes and fresh juices in the morning to an impressive street food selection as the day progresses.
The kitchen takes a fusion approach to street food, drawing influences from across the globe. Current highlights include smash burgers, shrimp toast, kimchi salad with dumplings, and a chicken katsu sandwich that locals are already calling a future classic. Konrogrill-style skewers transport you momentarily to Japan, while the brunch menu features well-executed egg dishes for those easing into their day.
What sets the drinks program apart is its commitment to local character. The cocktail menu showcases creativity alongside classics, and the beer selection leans heavily toward Amsterdam craft brews. Whether you’re after a morning coffee, an afternoon aperitif, or cocktails that extend into the early hours, the bar adapts to your mood.
The outdoor terrace, positioned on the sunny corner where Javastraat meets Sumatrastraat, offers prime people-watching during Amsterdam’s warmer months. When temperatures drop, the interior provides that particular Dutch coziness—gezelligheid—that turns a simple drink into a lingering afternoon.
For groups, Bar Basquiat offers a semi-private lounge space accommodating up to 20 guests for meals or around 55 for drinks, with customized menus available by arrangement.
Bar Basquiat sits in the heart of the Indische Buurt, one of Amsterdam’s most culturally diverse neighborhoods. The area’s name—literally “Indies Neighborhood”—dates to the early 20th century, when streets were named after islands in the former Dutch East Indies: Java, Sumatra, Borneo, Celebes.
What was once a working-class district built to house dockworkers has transformed dramatically since the 1990s. Today, Javastraat pulses with energy from its mix of Turkish bakeries (don’t miss Kardas), North African grocers, trendy cafés, and international restaurants. An estimated 100 languages are spoken in these streets—a diversity reflected in the flavors and faces you’ll encounter walking to and from the bar.
The transformation has brought some of Amsterdam’s most exciting venues to this corner of the city. Walter Woodbury Bar, just down Javastraat, pioneered the area’s cocktail scene. Studio K on Timorplein combines cinema, restaurant, and club in one cultural hub. The lush Flevopark lies at the eastern edge of the neighborhood, offering a peaceful green escape along the water.
Bar Basquiat adapts its personality throughout the day:
During summer, arriving early secures terrace seating—particularly valuable on warm evenings when the corner catches the last of the sun. In winter, the interior offers a warm refuge from Amsterdam’s grey days.
For Friday or Saturday nights, reservations are advisable, especially during peak tourist season or when events are happening nearby.
Address: Javastraat 88, 1094 HM Amsterdam
By tram: Tram 14 runs directly from Amsterdam Centraal Station to Javaplein, with the journey taking approximately 19 minutes. The stop is just moments from the bar. Tram 7 also terminates at Flevopark, within walking distance.
By bike: The most Amsterdam way to arrive. From the city center, head east along the Amstel river, then follow Mauritskade to Linnaeusstraat. Turn right, and Javastraat is your second left. The ride takes 15–20 minutes at a comfortable pace. Plenty of bicycle parking is available along Javastraat.
On foot: A 35–40 minute walk from Centraal Station through the Plantage neighborhood and past Oosterpark provides an excellent introduction to Amsterdam Oost.
From Amstel Station: Rent a bike and cycle through Oosterpark for a scenic shortcut that drops you just blocks from Bar Basquiat.
