Local insights
Three things every local will tell you.
Don’t buy a pass on day 1.
Most passes activate on first scan and run consecutive hours. Walk the canals and Jordaan first, then activate the pass on your museum day so you do not burn 12 hours sleeping off jet lag.
Pick a neighborhood · First-time guide
Reserve a slot or you don’t get in.
Rijksmuseum, Moco and the canal cruises require timed entry even with a pass. Book the slot in the operator app the moment your pass arrives — they sell out 3–5 days ahead in summer.
Browse places · Weather guide · Tours
The mix-and-match move.
For a 3-day trip, locals often pair a 48h I amsterdam Card (museums + tram) with a 3-pick Go City Explorer (open-boat + Heineken + WONDR). Total around €140 vs around €190 paying separately.

FAQ
Honest answers to the questions we get most about Amsterdam city passes.
Is the I Amsterdam City Card worth it in 2026?
It pays for itself if you visit 2 to 3 paid attractions per day (like the Rijksmuseum or ARTIS Royal Zoo) and use the tram frequently. For slower itineraries with one museum a day, pay-as-you-go usually wins. Use the calculator above with your real plan to see the exact savings delta.
Does the I Amsterdam City Card include the Anne Frank House?
No. The Anne Frank House and the Van Gogh Museum are not included in any Amsterdam city pass. Book those time-slotted tickets separately on the official sites well in advance — Anne Frank House releases tickets 6 weeks ahead and they sell out within minutes.
Does any city pass cover trains from Schiphol Airport?
The I amsterdam Card does not. The Amsterdam Travel Ticket (€20–34) and the Amsterdam & Region Travel Ticket (€23–44) include the Schiphol airport train (NS or Bus 397) — pick one of those if airport transit matters.
What is the difference between the I Amsterdam City Card and the Museumkaart?
The I Amsterdam City Card is a tourist pass for short trips (1–5 days) and includes public transport, a canal cruise and bike rental. The Museumkaart is an annual pass primarily for Dutch residents — covers 450+ museums across the Netherlands but no transport, no canal cruise, no tourist extras. If you will visit 4+ Dutch museums in any 12-month window, the Museumkaart is the cheaper math.
Which Amsterdam pass is cheapest per day?
For pure transport: Amsterdam Travel Ticket at €20/day. For all-inclusive sightseeing: I amsterdam 120h is €28/day; Go City All-Inclusive 5-day works out to €41.80/day with day trips bundled in.
Can I buy more than one Amsterdam city pass?
Yes — and locals often do. A common mix is a 48h I amsterdam City Card for museums and tram, plus a 3-choice Go City Explorer for immersive attractions like WONDR or a bike tour. You can also combine an ATT or ARTT for transport with a Museumkaart for museums.
Crucial rules
Three rules trip up more visitors than anything else on this page. Get these right and the rest is arithmetic.
- The Van Gogh Museum and the Anne Frank House are not included in the I amsterdam City Card — or any Amsterdam city pass. Book both separately on the official sites, well in advance.
- The Rijksmuseum requires a free timed entry slot even with a pass. Reserve it in the operator app as soon as your pass arrives — slots sell out days ahead in high season.
- The NS train from Schiphol Airport is not covered by GVB transport passes. The I amsterdam Card’s unlimited transport is GVB-only, so the airport train costs extra — a €5.50 surcharge per verified 2026 data. If airport transit matters, pick the Amsterdam Travel Ticket or Amsterdam & Region Travel Ticket instead.
Methodology
Re-verified each quarter. Written by people who actually live here. Every pass on this page is checked against the operator’s official site every 90 days — pricing, inclusions, reservation policies. “Most first-time visitors overbuy. If you are spending 2 days in Amsterdam and visiting the Rijksmuseum, a canal cruise, and one more attraction, the 48-hour I amsterdam City Card usually wins — especially once you factor in unlimited tram rides.”
