Rembrandtplein, Amsterdam’s lively Rembrandt Square, evolved from a 17th‑century butter market into one of the city’s most iconic entertainment districts. The square was once the Botermarkt where farmers sold dairy and poultry until a cast‑iron statue of Rembrandt was moved to its centre in 1876, giving it a new name.

Today the statue presides over a granite plaza redesigned in 2009, surrounded by tree‑lined terraces, neon‑lit clubs and Art Nouveau cafés.
