Historical landmark

Amsterdam’s historical landmarks read like a timeline of the city’s evolution. The Houten Huis on Begijnhof (built around 1528, one of only two surviving wooden houses in the centre) marks the medieval city. Dam Square and the Royal Palace (originally the 17th-century Town Hall) anchor the Golden Age. The Westerkerk on Prinsengracht (1631), Oude Kerk in De Wallen (the city’s oldest building, consecrated 1306) and Nieuwe Kerk on Dam Square cover the religious history. The Magere Brug (“Skinny Bridge”) and Hortus Botanicus mark the 17th- and 18th-century expansions, and the Beurs van Berlage on Damrak inaugurated modernist Dutch architecture in 1903. This archive collects them and the rest. Each listing notes construction date, current use, and visiting access.
