Let me tell you about this place that’s been making waves in Amsterdam’s food scene. The Vegan Junk Food Bar, or VJFB as the cool kids call it, is like a vegan’s dream come true. Picture this: all the guilty pleasures of junk food, but without a single animal product in sight. It’s like magic, I swear!
I’m not vegan myself, but I’ve got a few plant-based pals who dragged me here once, and boy, was I in for a surprise. The VJFB2D⢠Amsterdam location on Staringplein is where it all began back in 2017. Since then, they’ve expanded faster than my waistline after a visit (just kidding⦠sort of).
You’ll find VJFB spots dotted around Amsterdam, each with its own vibe. The one in De Pijp is always buzzing, while the Downtown location on Reguliersdwarsstraat is perfect for when you’re exploring the city center and need a quick vegan fix.
But what exactly are you gonna find at VJFB? Well, imagine your favorite comfort foods â burgers, fries, shakes â all done up vegan-style. And we’re not talking about sad, flavorless patties here. These folks know how to pack a punch when it comes to taste. It’s the kinda place that’ll make even the most die-hard carnivore do a double-take.
Okay, so what makes VJFB stand out in a city that’s already pretty darn vegan-friendly? Let me break it down for ya:
But here’s the thing that really gets me about VJFB â it’s not just about the food. It’s about changing perceptions. I’ve seen plenty of non-vegan friends absolutely gobsmacked by how good the food is. It’s the kinda place that makes you think,” Hey, maybe this vegan thing isn’t so bad after all.”
And let’s talk about the atmosphere for a sec. It’s got this cool, edgy vibe that makes you feel like you’re part of something bigger. The staff are usually covered in tattoos and piercings, the music’s pumping, and there’s always a buzz in the air. It’s not your typical quiet, hippy-dippy vegan joint, that’s for sure.
When’s the best time to hit up VJFB? Well, that depends on what you’re after. If you’re looking to avoid the crowds and have a chill meal, your best bet is to go for a late lunch or an early dinner on a weekday. But let’s be real, part of the fun is the bustling atmosphere, right?
Weekends are when VJFB really comes alive. Friday and Saturday nights are peak times, especially at the Downtown location. It’s when all the cool kids come out to play, and the vibe is electric. Just be prepared to wait for a table â these places can get packed faster than you can say” plant-based burger.”
If you’re a brunch person (and let’s face it, who isn’t? ), Sunday’s your day. They don’t do a specific brunch menu, but trust me, their regular offerings are perfect for soaking up last night’s excesses. Nothing beats a stack of vegan pancakes or a loaded breakfast burger to kick-start your day.
Now, here’s a pro tip from yours truly: if you’re visiting Amsterdam during the summer, try to snag a spot at one of their outdoor seating areas. There’s something magical about munching on vegan junk food while people-watching on a sunny Amsterdam day. Just remember to bring your sunglasses â those colorful dishes can be pretty dazzling in the sunlight!
But honestly? Any time is a good time for VJFB. Whether you’re stumbling in for a late-night snack (they’re open till late, bless ’em), or popping in for a quick lunch between sightseeing, you’re guaranteed a good time. Just make sure you come hungry â portions here are not for the faint-hearted.
Getting to VJFB is a piece of vegan cake, no matter which location you’re aiming for. Amsterdam’s public transport system is top-notch, and these guys have strategically placed their restaurants in easily accessible spots. But let’s break it down by location, shall we?
For the OG spot, VJFB2D⢠Amsterdam on Staringplein, you’ve got a few options. If you’re a fan of trams (and who isn’t in Amsterdam? ), hop on tram 1 or 11 and get off at the 1e Con. Huygensstraat stop. From there, it’s just a short walk. If you’re more of a bus person, lines 15 and 247 will get you close too.
For the De Pijp location, take the metro to De Pijp station (that’s on lines 52 and 50), and you’re practically there. It’s also a great excuse to explore the Albert Cuyp market before or after your meal â just sayin’.
The Downtown location on Reguliersdwarsstraat is smack bang in the middle of everything. You can easily walk here from Dam Square or Central Station if you’re feeling energetic. If not, trams 2, 11, and 12 all stop nearby at the Koningsplein stop.
But here’s the thing about Amsterdam â it’s a city made for cycling. If you really want to feel like a local (and burn off some of those vegan calories), rent a bike! Just be careful not to overindulge before your ride back â cycling with a food baby is not as fun as it sounds, trust me.
And if all else fails? Just plug the address into your favorite map app and follow the smell of delicious vegan junk food. You can’t miss it!
