The Rijksmuseum Gardens (Rijksmuseumtuinen) offer a peaceful retreat in Amsterdam’s bustling Museum Quarter. These meticulously designed gardens surrounding the world-famous Rijksmuseum combine historical Dutch garden design with contemporary sculptures and modern installations.
Designed by landscape architects Copijn in collaboration with architect Pierre Cuypers, these gardens showcase 7,000 plants, 16,000 bulbs, and over 60 historical sculptures and architectural fragments. The 14,500-square-meter space serves as an outdoor museum where visitors can experience Dutch garden heritage alongside world-class art installations.
Entry is completely free, making this one of Amsterdam’s most accessible cultural experiences. The gardens operate daily from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM year-round.
This formal garden section honors the museum’s architect with symmetrical hedges, geometric patterns, and a central fountain. The design reflects 19th-century Dutch garden traditions with precisely manicured pathways and seasonal flower displays.
Experience authentic Dutch landscape design through native plantings, meandering paths, and a natural stream. This section recreates the romantic garden style popular during the museum’s construction period.
The gardens house an impressive outdoor collection including works by Louise Bourgeois, Joan Miró exhibition pieces, and historical Dutch architectural fragments. Notable pieces include the restored Herepoort (1621 city gate from Groningen) and a 1933 telephone booth.
This restored 18th-century garden pavilion from Haarlem now serves as an espresso bar and visitor center. The historic structure provides refreshments while offering garden views.
Each season offers distinct experiences in the Rijksmuseum Gardens:
Spring (April-May): Peak season for tulips and bulb flowers. The gardens transform into a colorful display showcasing classic Dutch horticulture. Weather is mild and ideal for walking.
Summer (June-August): Full bloom period with exhibitions and outdoor events. Arrive early morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds and heat.
Autumn (September-November): Changing foliage creates dramatic color contrasts. Fewer visitors allow for peaceful exploration, though weather can be unpredictable.
Winter (December-March): Sculptural beauty of bare trees and frost-covered pathways. The gardens offer serene winter photography opportunities.
Pro tip: Visit on weekday mornings for the most peaceful experience. The gardens open at 9:00 AM when lighting conditions are optimal for photography.
The Rijksmuseum Gardens are easily accessible through Amsterdam’s excellent public transportation network.
Take trams 2, 5, or 12 to “Rijksmuseum” stop. The gardens are immediately adjacent to the museum entrance.
Metro Line 52 to Vijzelgracht station, then a 5-minute walk through the Museum Quarter.
Bike-friendly routes throughout Amsterdam lead directly to the museum. Use the famous passage through the Rijksmuseum building itself—open to cyclists and pedestrians.
Take the train to Amsterdam Centraal (15 minutes), then tram 2 or 12 to the museum (10 minutes).
