Club Smokey

Club Smokey is a mid-sized party nightclub at Rembrandtplein 18-20 in central Amsterdam, playing hits, pop, hip-hop, R&B and house to a mostly tourist and student crowd. It is not a coffeeshop. The licensed cannabis seller is Coffeeshop Smokey, a separate business a few doors along at Rembrandtplein 24. Go for an easy, central, commercial-music night out; look elsewhere if you want underground DJs or a polished, high-service venue.

What Club Smokey is like

Club Smokey has been part of the Rembrandtplein nightlife strip for more than 20 years, according to the club. It sells itself on live DJs and local performers, themed nights and handcrafted cocktails rather than big-name bookings. The music leans commercial: recognisable hits, hip-hop, R&B and party house that most of a mixed group can dance to.

With a capacity of around 300, it is far smaller than neighbours such as Escape, which holds up to 2,000 people. That makes it feel full quickly on weekends. I amsterdam notes that nights are photographed by professional photographers, so expect cameras on the dance floor and your picture possibly appearing on the club’s social channels.

What reviewers say

Guest opinion is split. On Tripadvisor, Club Smokey scores 3.3 out of 5 from 129 reviews, with almost as many “terrible” ratings as “excellent” ones. Positive reviews praise the loud, varied music, the lively atmosphere and cheap shots. Negative reviews mention rude door staff, bar service problems and a lost cloakroom item. Many of those reviews date from 2013 to 2023, so treat them as patterns to watch for, not a verdict on the current team.

Smoking rules inside

Dutch law bans smoking tobacco inside all bars, clubs and coffeeshops, and that includes separate indoor smoking rooms. The Dutch Supreme Court ruled in 2019 that the smoking-room exception for hospitality venues was invalid. Smoking is still allowed on outdoor terraces that are open on at least one side.

Older listings, including I amsterdam, still describe a large smoking area at Club Smokey. Ask staff on arrival where smoking is permitted. Don’t assume you can smoke cannabis in the club: buy it only from a licensed coffeeshop, and follow that venue’s house rules.

Best time to visit

• Friday and Saturday: the busiest nights and the only ones the club’s own website currently lists. Arrive before midnight to avoid the longest queue.
• Weeknights: third-party listings show the club open seven days a week, and weeknights are usually quieter. Check the website or Instagram first, because weekday opening is not confirmed on the official site.
• Amsterdam Dance Event: Club Smokey has appeared as a venue on the ADE programme. ADE 2026 runs from 21 to 25 October; use our ADE 2026 planner to see whether it is hosting events this year.
• King’s Day: held on 27 April, or 26 April when the 27th falls on a Sunday. Rembrandtplein is packed that night, so expect crowds and queues across the square.

How to get to Club Smokey

Club Smokey is on the north side of Rembrandtplein, the square between the Amstel river and the Munt Tower, not in the Red Light District. Look for the large neon Smokey lettering, which covers both the club and the coffeeshop.

• Tram: lines 4 and 14 stop at Rembrandtplein. Both run from Amsterdam Centraal; line 14 goes via Dam and Rokin.
• Metro: Waterlooplein station is about a six-minute walk away.
• Night bus: trams and metros stop running around 00:30. GVB night buses N85 and N87 serve the Rembrandtplein stop, and the night network radiates from Centraal Station.
• Paying: tap in and out with a contactless debit or credit card or phone (OVpay), or use an OV-chipkaart. Drivers do not accept cash. Night buses cost a separate fare and are not covered by GVB’s daily price cap.
• Bike: lock it to a proper rack, not a bridge railing. If you have been drinking, leave it and take the night bus.

For live departures, use the 9292 journey planner or GVB and search for the Rembrandtplein stop. Taxis in the centre are slow on weekend nights, so public transport or walking is usually faster within the canal ring.
