Café Trinity (also listed as Trinity Bar or Cafe Trinity Bar) is a casual bar-café at Oudezijds Voorburgwal 46, on one of the canals of De Wallen, Amsterdam’s Red Light District. It is roughly a 5 to 7 minute walk from Amsterdam Centraal. Expect breakfast, sandwiches, snacks, beer, cocktails and live sports on TV, plus a small terrace facing the canal. Listings disagree. Some directories show an 11:00 opening and a 03:00 weekend close. The later close is unlikely to apply now: since April 2023, bars, cafés and restaurants in De Wallen must close at 02:00 on weekend nights, may not admit new guests after 01:00, and must close their terraces at 01:00. The city has proposed keeping these rules in place until April 1, 2027.
What to expect
The venue describes itself as a cozy little bar with a terrace facing the canal, offering breakfast, sandwiches, snacks, beers, cocktails, live sports and music. Tripadvisor reviewers most often mention the mac and cheese, the Irish coffee and the beer selection. Several reviewers also ordered pancakes. Inside, it looks like a traditional Amsterdam pub; design studio Insane Productions redid the interior with aged-effect walls and tin ceiling tiles.
Reviews are mixed. Café Trinity scores 3.9 out of 5 from 159 reviews on Tripadvisor. Some reviewers like the friendly staff and the canal-side spot, while others complain about slow service and small portions. It is also popular with stag parties. Best time to visit
Go in the late morning or early afternoon for the calmest visit. De Wallen is at its quietest early in the day, and the terrace is a pleasant place for breakfast or a sandwich before visiting the museums nearby. The atmosphere changes after dark, when the district fills with visitors, and gets busiest on weekend nights. If you want a table on the terrace, arrive well before 01:00, when terraces in the district have to close.
For big football matches, expect a crowd around kick-off. The TVs are part of the appeal, so decide whether you want that atmosphere or would rather avoid it.
How to get there
On foot: From Amsterdam Centraal, leave by the city-side exit, cross Prins Hendrikkade and follow Oudezijds Voorburgwal south along the canal. Number 46 is a few doors past Our Lord in the Attic at number 38–40, which is about a 5 to 7 minute walk from the station. From Dam Square, walk east through the narrow lanes toward the canal. It takes about five minutes.
By metro: Metro lines 51, 53 and 54 stop at Nieuwmarkt, a short walk away. You can also take any metro or tram to Centraal Station and walk from there.
By bike: Bike racks fill up quickly in this part of the center. Lock your bike to a proper rack, and walk it along the busiest lanes in the evening.
By car: Driving is not recommended. Streets in De Wallen are narrow and partly car-free. If you have to drive, the De Bijenkorf garage near Dam Square is a common option for this area.
Tips and local rules
- Finish your drink inside or on the terrace. Drinking on the street is banned in the Red Light District, and so is smoking cannabis on the street, with a fine of €100.
- Never photograph sex workers in the windows. It is forbidden and considered very disrespectful. Keep your phone away when walking past the windows.
- On Friday and Saturday nights, arrive before 01:00. Venues in De Wallen cannot admit new guests after that time.
- Keep your voice down when you leave late. People live on these canals, and noise is one of the main reasons for the district’s rules.
- Watch your bag and phone in the crowds, as pickpockets work the busiest lanes.
