Who Hotel & Bar 55 suits
This is a no-frills base, not a hotel you stay at for the hotel itself. The trade-off is simple: you get one of the most central addresses in Amsterdam for a relatively low price, and in return you accept a small room, a busy street and limited staff hours.
It is a good fit if you:
- Are an adult traveler or a group of friends sharing a twin or triple room
- Want to walk to Dam Square, the Oude Kerk and Amsterdam Centraal
- Plan to spend late evenings out and only need the room to sleep
- Like the idea of a pub with live sport and music downstairs

- Are a light sleeper or need a quiet room on weekend nights

Rooms and facilities
The hotel has nine rooms in three room types: singles, twins and triples. Each room has a private bathroom with shower and toiletries, a flat-screen TV with cable channels, a safe, air conditioning and heating. Housekeeping is daily, and Hotels.com lists in-room Wi-Fi speeds of 250+ Mbps.
Two points deserve a reality check. Hotels.com lists the rooms as soundproofed, but several guests report hearing the busy street below. One reviewer also said the air conditioning struggled in summer. Rooms are described as small, which is typical for older buildings in this part of Amsterdam.
Bar 55 downstairs
The ground-floor pub gives the building its name and most of its character. Bar 55 bills itself as a sports and live-music pub with Guinness and eight other beers on tap, live sport on its screens and regular live music on a small stage. It has the easygoing, gezellig (cozy, convivial) feel of an old Amsterdam brown café. Groups of 10 or more get 10% off, and the pub’s Google rating of 4.5 is noticeably higher than the hotel’s booking-site scores.
According to the pub’s own site, Bar 55 is closed Monday and Tuesday. It opens from noon to 01:00 on Wednesday and Thursday, and from noon to 03:00 Friday through Sunday. Rooms above a pub that stays open until 03:00 help explain the noise complaints in reviews.
The cannabis venue directory Coffeeshop Direct also lists the bar as smoker-friendly, but its listed opening hours don’t match the pub’s own. Treat that listing as possibly outdated, and ask the bar directly if smoke matters to you.

Hotel review scores sit in the middle to low range across booking platforms. The pattern is consistent: the location scores well, while the rooms are where the hotel loses points.

Guests praise the central location, friendly staff and good value for the price. Recurring complaints include worn or stained mattresses, cleanliness problems, tired towels and noise from both the street and inside the building. A few reviewers said they felt uneasy at night without 24-hour reception, including one who described drunk passers-by banging on the front door. Location on Warmoesstraat
Warmoesstraat is one of the oldest streets in Amsterdam. It runs parallel to Damrak along the western edge of De Wallen, so you are between the Damrak side of the old center and the canals of the Red Light District. Most historic-center sights are a short walk away. The Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum are on Museumplein, on the far side of the canal ring, so plan on a tram ride for those.

- Smoking cannabis in public has been banned in the Red Light District, on Dam Square, on Damrak and at Nieuwmarkt since 25 May 2023, with a fine of about €100.
- Drinking alcohol on the street is prohibited and can cost you a fine of about €95.
- Photographing or filming sex workers is forbidden.
- The city restricts late-night hospitality and window hours in De Wallen, so check a venue’s current hours before planning a late night.
- Crowds attract pickpockets, especially in the evening, so keep phones and wallets secure.
Getting there
From Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, take the train to Amsterdam Centraal station. Trains run several times an hour, the trip takes about 15 to 17 minutes and a single ticket costs around €5 to €6. You can check times and tickets on the NS website.
From Centraal, walk rather than taking a tram. Leave by the main city-side exit and head south along Damrak. Then turn left through one of the narrow lanes such as Oudebrugsteeg to reach Warmoesstraat, which runs one block east of and parallel to Damrak. The walk takes under 10 minutes. A tram to Dam Square would carry you past the hotel and leave you walking back.
There is no on-site parking, and the medieval streets around Warmoesstraat are poorly suited to cars. If you drive to Amsterdam, park at a garage elsewhere in the city and continue by public transport.
Best times to stay

- King’s Day (27 April, or 26 April when the 27th falls on a Sunday): the whole center turns into a street party, so book early and expect noise.
- Summer: long evenings for canal walks, but also peak crowds and some of the highest room prices.
- Autumn: fewer tourists than summer and a good season for museums and churches such as the Oude Kerk.
- Winter: the 15th Amsterdam Light Festival runs from 26 November 2026 to 17 January 2027. The artworks are in public space, so you can see them free on foot.
Room prices and extra fees
Room prices change with the day and season. In September 2026, KAYAK showed rates from about $113 a night. It reported Sunday as the cheapest night on average (around £59) and Monday as the most expensive (around £171). Before you book, check the total price, because two extra costs can raise it and a deposit may apply:
- Tourist tax: Amsterdam charges 12.5% of the room price, excluding VAT, in 2026. A €100 night therefore adds €12.50.
- VAT: hotel stays in the Netherlands have been taxed at 21% since 1 January 2026, up from 9%.
- Deposit: at least one booking platform has listed a €150 security deposit payable at the property, so confirm this when you book.
