A 17th-century lock-keeper’s house that leans picturesquely over the Oude Schans canal, Café de Sluyswacht is equal parts monument, neighbourhood pub, and sunny waterside terrace. Expect well-kept Dutch beers, legendary bitterballen, and a front-row seat on everyday Amsterdam life. It’s the sort of place you pop in for “one” and end up closing the bar.
Built in 1695 as the living quarters for the sluice guard who operated the lock between the Nieuwmarkt and the river IJ, the little wooden house has survived floods, fires, and some 330 years of beer-fuelled merriment. Its famous tilt isn’t subsidence – it was deliberately constructed at a slight angle so rainwater would run off the façade. Today, the interior still creaks charmingly, but modern reinforcement keeps everything safe and sound. (sluyswacht.nl)
| Classic | Why It’s Great |
|---|---|
| Hertog Jan pils | Crisp Dutch lager that pairs effortlessly with canal views. |
| Rotating local taps | Recent guests include Brouwerij ‘t IJ IPA and Oedipus stout – ask what’s pouring. |
| Bitterballen | Golden, gravy-rich croquettes – the staff swear by a dash of Dijon. |
| Old Amsterdam cheese platter | Big flavour, small price, excellent with a fruity Belgian dubbel. |

Local law: terraces must close by midnight. After that the party continues indoors until last orders.
| Season | Why Visit |
|---|---|
| Late spring & summer | Terrace comes alive; sunset flares over Montelbaanstoren. Arrive before 16:00 to snag a canal-edge table. |
| December nights | Mulled wine, misty canals and maximum gezelligheid indoors. |
| King’s Day & Pride | Orange-tinted or rainbow-draped crowds, street music and bar staff in festive fancy dress – expect standing room only. |
Café de Sluyswacht distils Amsterdam’s charm into one slightly crooked canal-house: living history, laid-back staff, good beer, and a view you never tire of. Whether you drop by for a quick pils or linger until the 2 a.m. bell, it’s the kind of local gem that makes the city feel like home.
