A (Very) Short History
Built in 1695 as the living quarters for the sluice guard who operated the lock between the Nieuwmarkt and the river IJ, the little wooden house has survived floods, fires, and some 330 years of beer-fuelled merriment. Its famous tilt isn’t subsidence – it was deliberately constructed at a slight angle so rainwater would run off the façade.
