A (Very) Short History

Built in 1695 as the living quarters for the sluice guard who operated the lock between the Nieuwmarkt and the river IJ, the little wooden house has survived floods, fires, and some 330 years of beer-fuelled merriment. Its famous tilt isn’t subsidence – it was deliberately constructed at a slight angle so rainwater would run off the façade. 1. Mind the floorboards – centuries of foot traffic mean some are uneven; flat shoes beat stilettos.
2. Ask for ‘De Toren’ view. The far-corner terrace table frames the Montelbaanstoren perfectly.
3. Cash is handy. Cards are accepted, but the bar can go offline during very busy events.
4. Private hire of the entire café (max. 60 guests) is possible outside peak times – rates are available upon request.
5. Look up! The original 17th-century pulley for the lock keeper’s tools still hangs inside the gable.
