What Café DIEP! was like
Café DIEP! was a late-night bar, not a coffee house. I amsterdam described it as dark and a little scruffy, a modern take on the Amsterdam brown café, with no minimalist decor or finger food. It drew design types and counterculture artists for years.
Music was the main draw. Bar staff and DJs chose the soundtrack, which could go from Depeche Mode to Frank Sinatra in one night. Regulars mention a DJ booth that locals took turns in, karaoke on the last Sunday of the month, a mirrored bathroom and a strong list of whiskies and ginger beers.
Drinks were cheap for the city centre, and on Thursdays the bar served Indonesian dishes for €10. Outside, the city’s terrace plan allowed a small terrace 3.80 metres deep and 2.60 metres wide along the street.
