On a tree-lined corner where Jacob Obrechtstraat meets Johannes Verhulststraat, something special happens every Saturday. ZuiderMRKT transforms this quiet Oud-Zuid square into a vibrant gathering place where neighborhood residents and curious visitors come together over fresh produce, artisanal goods, and genuine community connection.
Founded in September 2011 by a group of friends who lamented the disappearance of local shops from their beloved neighborhood, ZuiderMRKT operates as a true cooperative—the Coöperatieve Vereeniging zuiderMRKT. This isn’t just a market; it’s a neighborhood initiative where members volunteer at stalls, collectively decide what products to offer, and direct any surplus funds toward charitable causes focused on sustainable food production and healthy eating education.
ZuiderMRKT may be compact—around 18 stalls—but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in quality and character. The cooperative runs its own fruit and vegetable stall, sourcing organic produce directly from Dutch farmers whenever possible. Beyond the cooperative stall, you’ll discover:
Fresh provisions: Farm eggs, artisanal bread (including varieties made from heritage grains), freshly caught fish, quality meats, and poultry from trusted suppliers.
Specialty delights: Organic mushrooms, aged Dutch cheeses, Mediterranean olives and olive oil, freshly made pasta, house-roasted coffee, loose-leaf teas, and local honey.
Sweet treats: Homemade tarts, raspberry-based products, traditional pancakes, and seasonal pastries.
Non-food finds: Fresh-cut flowers, sustainable household items, and rotating neighbor stalls showcasing local creative endeavors.
The market also features a “rotation stall” reserved for neighborhood residents to showcase their own initiatives—a reflection of ZuiderMRKT’s deep commitment to community building.
ZuiderMRKT welcomes visitors every Saturday from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM, rain or shine.
Seasonal highlights bring their own character to the market. Spring delivers the first tender asparagus and strawberries. Summer means peak tomatoes, cucumbers, and abundant berries. Autumn brings pumpkins, crisp apples, and hearty root vegetables. Winter offers warming soups, seasonal treats, and festive specialties.
ZuiderMRKT sits in the heart of Oud-Zuid, one of Amsterdam’s most elegant neighborhoods. The area developed in the late 19th century as the city expanded southward, and today combines stately tree-lined streets with world-class cultural institutions.

Dining suggestions: After market shopping, refuel at nearby cafés like the historic Brasserie Van Dam or grab lunch at Le Pain Quotidien on the charming Cornelis Schuytstraat.
Is ZuiderMRKT the same as the Zuidermarkt? Yes, you’ll see both spellings used. The official name is “zuiderMRKT” (styled with capital MRKT), though locals often simply call it Zuidermarkt.
Can anyone shop at the market, or is it members-only? Everyone is welcome to shop! The cooperative membership involves volunteering and participating in market decisions, but all visitors can purchase from any stall.
Is the market suitable for families? Absolutely. The small, contained square makes it easy to keep track of children, and kids often enjoy sampling fresh fruits and watching the friendly vendors at work.
Are dogs allowed? Yes, leashed dogs are welcome at the outdoor market.
The market runs every Saturday, 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM, at the corner of Jacob Obrechtstraat and Johannes Verhulststraat in Amsterdam Oud-Zuid.
