From 1894 schoolhouse to boutique hotel
The building went up in 1894 as a school for higher education and opened to pupils in 1895. Over the next century, several educational institutions used it for subjects ranging from economics and administration to ICT. Extensions in 1902, 1907 and 1987 added an extra classroom, a separate gymnasium and a concierge lounge, and the building was registered as a listed building in 2002.
The hotel opened in 2005, with hospitality students working under the guidance of the hotel’s management and chef. Corendon rebranded the property to the Autograph Collection on 12 July 2022, and a multimillion-dollar renovation by Studio Piet Boon reopened the lobby, library, guest rooms and function spaces in June 2024.
What the classroom rooms are like
You may sleep in what was once the math, biology or economics classroom. The former classrooms keep their high ceilings and large windows, so many rooms get plenty of daylight, while the 2024 redesign uses a warm, calm color palette with modern furniture and statement art.
The school theme shows up in small details rather than props. Room numbers are written as chalkboard math problems, some rooms have accents such as a report card or tic-tac-toe etchings in a wooden table, and the hallway carpet carries handwritten Dutch and English lines like notes passed in class. The library sits across from the old principal’s office, and the bar occupies the space once used for physical education.
For events, the hotel has three salons named after P.C. Hooft, Suzanna van Baerle and Jan Herman Coster, plus a landscaped courtyard that can be reserved. The largest salon, PC Hooft, seats up to 90 people theater-style.
How students are involved today
The hotel says students from recognized vocational programs, such as International Hotel & Hospitality Management, get practical experience at the property. The hotel is run by a professional management team, so expect students alongside experienced staff rather than a hotel run entirely by trainees.
The Dean is where you’ll see the program most directly. ROC students work in the kitchen, in service and in management there, and Corendon kept the restaurant open under the new name The Dean in February 2025. The hotel’s homepage also lists it as The Deans Kitchen.
Dining: The Dean, the Bar & Lounge and The Gym
The Dean serves dinner Thursday to Monday from 6:00 pm, with a three-course menu at €32.50 per person, four- and five-course options, and an à la carte menu. The hotel says the restaurant now operates from The College Bar & Lounge, and it recommends booking ahead. Prices and hours can change, so confirm them on The Dean’s official page.
The Bar & Lounge, also designed by Piet Boon, is open all day for breakfast, brunch and lunch. Later in the day it serves wine, cocktails, bar bites and an afternoon tea.
The biggest change is The Gym by Sidney Schutte, which is due to open in the former school gymnasium next to the hotel, with its own entrance. Schutte spent twelve years at the two-Michelin-star Spectrum and is also taking over the hotel’s entire culinary program. The Gym will serve lunch and dinner Thursday to Monday, focusing on fish, shellfish and vegetables from a mostly à la carte menu, with chef’s-table seats and a walk-in communal table. The hotel’s site gives November 2026 as the opening date, while a September 2026 announcement says December, so check thegym.restaurant for reservations and the confirmed date.
The terrace between the hotel and the restaurant, which was once the schoolyard, becomes part of The Gym in spring and summer. Mondi, the Caribbean restaurant covered in earlier guides to this hotel, no longer appears among the hotel’s dining options.
Location in Oud-Zuid
The hotel is on a residential street in Oud-Zuid, just south of the city center. Museumplein, the Concertgebouw and the Albert Cuyp Market in De Pijp are all within walking distance, and the Museum Quarter around Museumplein is home to the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum. De Pijp is also a good area for markets and informal restaurants.
Reception sells museum tickets, and the hotel rents city bikes if you’d rather explore on two wheels.
Getting to The College Hotel
- From Schiphol by train: take a direct NS train to Amsterdam Zuid (about 6 to 7 minutes), then tram 25 to Roelof Hartplein, or metro 52 toward Noord to De Pijp, which is about a five-minute walk from the hotel.
- From Schiphol by bus: the Amsterdam Airport Express, bus 397, leaves from stop B17 outside Schiphol Plaza and stops at Concertgebouw and Museumplein. From there, you can walk to the hotel.
- From Amsterdam Centraal: tram 24 runs directly to Roelof Hartplein, a short walk from the hotel.
- By car: the hotel says its parking is currently unavailable and should reopen at the end of November 2026, so check before you drive.
Brand, loyalty and sustainability
As an Autograph Collection hotel, The College is part of Marriott Bonvoy, which matters if you collect or redeem Marriott points. Corendon still runs the property day to day under a franchise agreement signed in 2022.
