Ah, the Sexmuseum Amsterdam Venustempel â now there’s a place that’ll make your cheeks blush and your eyes widen! Located in the heart of Amsterdam at Damrak 18, this quirky museum is a must-visit for the curious and open-minded traveler. Trust me, I’ve been there, and it’s an experience you wonât forget in a hurry!
The museum, affectionately known as the” Temple of Venus,” has been shocking and delighting visitors since 1985. It’s a celebration of human sexuality in all its forms, from the tasteful to the downright raunchy. As you wander through its halls, you’ll encounter a vast collection of erotic art, artifacts, and exhibits that span centuries and cultures.
Now, I must warn you â this ainât your grandma’s museum (unless your grandma is particularly saucy). The Sexmuseum is bold, unapologetic, and sometimes a bit in-your-face. But that’s part of its charm! It’s a place where you can explore the taboo, giggle at the naughty bits, and maybe even learn a thing or two about the birds and the bees.
One thing I love about this place is how it balances education with entertainment. Sure, there are plenty of titillating displays, but there’s also a wealth of information about the history and cultural significance of sex. It’s like a crash course in human sexuality, but way more fun than any class you took in school!
Alright, let’s dive into the juicy bits â the key features that make the Sexmuseum Amsterdam Venustempel a standout attraction.
First up, we’ve got the historical exhibits. These bad boys take you on a journey through time, showing how attitudes towards sex have evolved (or sometimes, devolved) over the centuries. From ancient fertility statues to Victorian-era naughty postcards, it’s a fascinating peek into the dirty minds of our ancestors.
Next, there’s the art collection. And boy, is it something! You’ll find everything from classical nude paintings to modern erotic photography. Some of it’s beautiful, some of it’s shocking, and some of it might make you tilt your head and go âHuh, I didnât know that was physically possible. â
One of my favorite features is the âHalls of Fameâ section. It’s like a who’s who of sexual icons throughout history. You’ll see familiar faces like Marilyn Monroe and Madonna, alongside lesser-known but equally important figures in the world of sex and sensuality.
Oh, and let’s not forget about the interactive exhibits! Yeah, you heard me right â interactive. Now, before your mind goes to the gutter (though let’s be honest, in this museum, that’s kinda the point), Iâm talking about things like photo opportunities with risqué statues and hands-on (pun intended) educational displays.
The museum also boasts an impressive collection of sex toys throughout the ages. It’s amazing to see how, er, creative humans have been in their pursuit of pleasure. From ancient dildos to modern gadgets that look more like spacecraft than intimate accessories, it’s an eye-opening display.
And for those of you who love a good laugh, the humor section is a riot. It’s full of cheeky cartoons, bawdy jokes, and hilarious erotic artifacts that’ll have you in stitches. I mean, who knew sex could be so funny?
Lastly, I must mention the gift shop. Now, Iâm not usually one for museum gift shops, but this one is something else. It’s packed with quirky souvenirs that range from tasteful to downright naughty. Just be careful what you bring back for your mom, yeah?
Now, when’s the best time to get your sexy on at the Sexmuseum? Well, that’s a bit of a tricky question, âcause this place is popular all year round. But I’ve got some insider tips to help you make the most of your visit.
First off, let’s talk seasons. Amsterdam can get pretty chilly in the winter, which makes indoor attractions like the Sexmuseum even more appealing. Plus, there’s something kinda cozy about exploring the steamy exhibits while it’s frosty outside. On the flip side, summer in Amsterdam is gorgeous, and you might not want to spend too much time indoors. But hey, the museum’s air-conditioned, so it can be a nice break from the heat.
As for days of the week, I’d suggest avoiding weekends if you can. The place can get packed on Saturdays and Sundays, especially during peak tourist season. If you’re able to swing a weekday visit, you’ll have a much more relaxed experience. Tuesday through Thursday tends to be the sweet spot.
Time of day matters too. The museum opens at 9: 30 AM and closes at 11: 30 PM (yeah, it’s got some impressive stamina). I’d recommend going either early in the morning or later in the evening. Mid-afternoon is when it tends to get the most crowded.
Oh, and here’s a pro tip: if you’re in Amsterdam during King’s Day (April 27th), the city goes absolutely bonkers with celebrations. While this is awesome for partying, it can make visiting attractions a bit chaotic. So maybe save your Sexmuseum visit for another day unless you’re into the whole âsardines in a canâ experience.
Another thing to consider is whether you want to combine your visit with other activities. The Red Light District is just a stone’s throw away, so you could make a whole day of exploring Amsterdam’s saucier side. Just remember to be respectful and follow local etiquette.
Lastly, keep an eye out for special events or temporary exhibitions. The museum sometimes hosts themed nights or brings in guest curators, which can add an extra layer of excitement to your visit. Check their website or social media for updates.
Alright, let’s get you to the land of love and lust! The Sexmuseum Amsterdam Venustempel is super easy to find, which is great ’cause you don’t want to be wandering around asking strangers where the sex museum is (trust me, I learned that the hard way).
The museum is located at Damrak 18, 1012 LH Amsterdam. It’s right in the city center, so you’ve got plenty of options for getting there.
If you’re coming from Amsterdam Centraal Station (and let’s face it, most tourists do at some point), you’re in luck. The museum is just a 5-minute walk from the station. Just exit the station, turn right onto Damrak, and keep your eyes peeled. You can’t miss it – look for the building with the cheeky statues out front.
For those of you who prefer public transport (and who doesn’t love a good tram ride? ), you’ve got options. Tram lines 2, 11, 12, and 13 all stop near the museum. Get off at the Dam stop, and you’re just a short walk away. Just follow the giggles and blushing faces, and you’ll find it in no time.
If you’re staying a bit further out, the metro is your friend. Take lines 51, 53, or 54 to Nieuwmarkt station. From there, it’s about a 10-minute walk to the museum. Just head west on Damstraat, and you’ll hit Damrak in no time.
For the cyclists among you (and if you’re in Amsterdam, you really should give biking a go), there are plenty of bike racks near the museum. Just remember to lock up properly – you don’t want your ride getting stolen while you’re busy ogling the exhibits!
Now, I wouldn’t recommend driving to the museum. Amsterdam’s city center is notoriously tricky for cars, with limited parking and more cyclists than you can shake a stick at. Plus, after a few hours in the Sexmuseum, you might be too hot and bothered to operate heavy machinery safely, if you know what I mean.
If you’re coming from Schiphol Airport, you’ve got a couple of options. The easiest is to take the train to Amsterdam Centraal and then follow the directions above. Alternatively, you could grab a taxi or an Uber, but be warned – it’ll cost ya.
Oh, and here’s a little tip from yours truly: the area around the museum can get pretty busy, especially during peak hours. If you’re meeting friends there (because let’s face it, this is definitely a group activity), I’d suggest setting a meeting point nearby. The big letters spelling out “I Amsterdam” in front of the station make for a great rendezvous spot.
