Rosalia’s Menagerie transforms the principal floor of a 1651 canal house into an intimate cocktail haven that celebrates Amsterdam’s rich history in the spirits trade. Located on Kloveniersburgwal, one of Amsterdam’s oldest and most picturesque canals, this tiny speakeasy welcomes guests with a doorbell entry and first-come, first-served seating that rewards early arrivals. Established in 2017, the bar draws inspiration from the Netherlands’ legacy of trade, distilling, and innovation during the Golden Age. The carefully curated cocktail menu balances Dutch heritage spirits with international influences, showcasing the creativity and technical skill of talented bartenders who craft each drink with precision. The cozy atmosphere reflects the building’s residential history—intimate seating, warm lighting, and period details create an environment that feels more like visiting a sophisticated friend’s home than patronizing a commercial bar. The upstairs boutique inn offers guest rooms with beautiful canal views, but the ground-floor bar operates independently, welcoming both hotel guests and local cocktail enthusiasts. Operating daily from 6 PM until 1 AM without reservations, Rosalia’s Menagerie appeals to those who appreciate craft cocktails in an authentic historical setting. The combination of Dutch spirits heritage, skilled mixology, and genuine canal house ambiance makes this one of Centrum’s most charming cocktail destinations.
Behind an unassuming door on Kloveniersburgwal—one of Amsterdam’s oldest canals—lies Rosalia’s Menagerie, a cocktail bar that channels the spirit of 17th-century Dutch exploration into every glass. Established in 2017, this intimate speakeasy occupies the principal floor of a renovated canal house in the De Wallen neighborhood, where velvet seating, dark wood paneling, and curios from around the world create an atmosphere that feels both timeless and distinctly modern.
The bar takes its name and concept from the menageries that once thrived along this very canal during Amsterdam’s prosperous 17th century. Back then, the famous Blauw Jan menagerie stood on Kloveniersburgwal, housing exotic animals—tigers, monkeys, parrots, and even elephants—brought to the city by Dutch East India Company ships returning from trading expeditions across Asia. These collections of rare creatures and curiosities captivated wealthy merchants and ordinary citizens alike. Rosalia’s Menagerie revives that sense of wonder, though here the exotic specimens come in liquid form.
The 50 Best Discovery describes Rosalia’s as a “temple to Dutch spirits,” and for good reason. The bar is thought to house the largest genever selection in the Netherlands. Genever (also spelled jenever) is the traditional juniper-flavored spirit that predates English gin—a malty, aromatic liquor with roots stretching back to 16th-century pharmacists who distilled it as a medicinal tonic. During the Dutch Golden Age, genever production boomed in Amsterdam, and British soldiers encountered the spirit during military campaigns in the Low Countries, giving rise to the expression “Dutch courage.”
The mixologists at Rosalia’s use these local spirits as the foundation for their cocktails, following classic structures while incorporating unexpected ingredients. The menu reflects what the bar calls “an ongoing journey of transformation, bridging the gap between timeless classics and contemporary cocktails.” Signature drinks like the Cherry Oat Negroni and the Dutch Vieux Carré have earned devoted followings, and seasonal offerings—including a winter Eggnog Tiramisu—demonstrate the kitchen’s creative range.
If you cannot find exactly what you want on the menu, the bartenders will craft a bespoke cocktail based on your preferences. This personalized approach, combined with genuine expertise about Dutch distilling traditions, elevates a visit from simple drinking to something closer to education.
The interior rewards slow attention. Antique globes, vintage maps, taxidermy, and botanical specimens fill every corner—a deliberate echo of the curiosity cabinets that 17th-century Dutch collectors assembled with treasures from the VOC’s global trading routes. Candlelight and dimmed lamps cast warm shadows across plush seating arrangements that encourage lingering. Reviewers consistently describe the atmosphere as romantic and intimate, with a slight jazz sensibility that suits the speakeasy aesthetic.
Entry requires ringing a doorbell and waiting to be admitted—a small ritual that reinforces the sense of stepping into a hidden world. The bar seats a limited number of guests, and groups larger than six people are not accommodated. This constraint is intentional: Rosalia’s prioritizes quality of experience over volume, ensuring conversation remains possible without shouting over crowds.
The bar sits roughly a 15-minute walk from Amsterdam Centraal Station. Head south along Damrak, pass Dam Square, and continue to Kloveniersburgwal. Tram lines 4 and 14 stop at Rembrandtplein, placing you within a five-minute stroll. The Nieuwmarkt metro station is just 550 feet away.
Through a secret door concealed within the bar, stairs lead to Rosalia’s Inn Upstairs—six individually styled boutique hotel rooms occupying the upper floors of the 17th-century canal house. Each room carries a distinct theme (Wonders features Asian touches; Retro channels 1970s glamour; Baroque, at the top of the house, is the most ornate), and all offer king-sized beds, rain showers, complimentary minibars stocked with non-alcoholic drinks and snacks, and views overlooking either the canal or the interior courtyard.
Breakfast is prepared fresh each morning, with guests praising the made-to-order eggs and homemade muesli. The steep and narrow Dutch stairs typical of historic canal houses can prove challenging with heavy luggage, but staff assist with bags. The hotel ranks among the top 15 accommodations in Amsterdam on TripAdvisor, with reviewers noting the unique combination of boutique lodging and direct access to a world-class cocktail bar.
Weekday evenings offer the most relaxed experience. Arrive around 18:00 or 19:00 to claim a spot at the bar, where you can chat with the mixologists and watch them work. Fridays and Saturdays draw larger crowds, so expect a wait during peak hours.
Summer evenings pair well with a stroll along the canal before ducking into the bar’s cool interior. Winter visits carry their own appeal—the candlelit atmosphere and warming cocktails suit cold Amsterdam nights. If you find yourself in the city for King’s Day (April 27), the bar captures the celebratory energy, though space fills quickly.
Rosalia’s Menagerie succeeds by doing several things exceptionally well. The cocktails demonstrate technical skill and creativity without pretension. The staff balance expertise with warmth, explaining drinks and ingredients without condescension. The space itself tells a coherent story—one that connects Amsterdam’s trading past to its present-day craft cocktail culture.
The bar earned the Dutch Best Bartender award in 2022, recognition that confirms what visitors experience firsthand: this is serious mixology in an unserious setting, where curiosity and pleasure take precedence over formality.
Seek out the unmarked door on Kloveniersburgwal. Ring the bell. Step inside and let the menagerie reveal itself.
