First, make your way to Amsterdam-Noord. It’s closer than the name might suggest, and getting there is easy. Here’s the route:
1. From Central Station: Head to the back of the station, on the IJ side, and look for the free ferry to Buiksloterweg. Ferries run every few minutes, so you usually won’t have long to wait.
2. Enjoy the Ferry Ride: The crossing takes about 3 minutes. Take in the view across the IJ, and, if the weather’s good, stand at the front of the ferry.
3. Welcome to Noord: Once you get off, you’re in Amsterdam-Noord. The A’DAM Tower is right in front of you. You’re not heading there, but it’s a handy landmark.
4. The Walk: It’s about a 10-15 minute walk to On the Roof. Head east along the waterfront and follow the path as it curves to the right. You’ll pass the EYE Film Museum, then continue to the Tolhuistuin complex.
5. Finding the Entrance: On the Roof sits on top of Tolhuistuin. Look for signs or ask someone nearby if you’re unsure. The entrance can be easy to miss the first time around.
