Law & Order Cocktail Bar brings sophisticated mixology to Voetboogstraat, a quiet side street near Spui square where Amsterdam’s student energy meets refined cocktail culture. This intimate venue earned Gault&Millau’s prestigious Cocktail Bar of the Year 2023 recognition through its creative approach to classic cocktails and commitment to personal service in a dimly lit, relaxed setting. The menu showcases inventive twists on timeless recipes—the Pink Pisco brightens the traditional sour with rhubarb, lemon, and egg white, while the signature Law & Order Manhattan elevates the classic with bourbon, bianco vermouth, port, beetroot, and pecan. Additional standout serves include the Bitter Butter and Carrot Tequila alongside expertly executed classics like the Old Fashioned and Malaka Daiquiri. The bar accommodates non-drinkers with thoughtful non-alcoholic options that receive the same creative attention as spirits-based cocktails. The intimate space fills with a carefully curated hip-hop playlist that complements the relaxed atmosphere without overwhelming conversation. Art-deco touches and fancy decor create visual interest while maintaining the cozy, approachable vibe that regulars love. Operating on a walk-in only basis (no reservations), Law & Order opens at 5 PM and serves until late, making it ideal for spontaneous visits, pre-dinner drinks, or a dedicated evening exploring Amsterdam’s acclaimed cocktail scene.
On a narrow street once thundering with crossbow fire, one of Amsterdam’s most acclaimed cocktail bar pours drinks that demand your full attention. Law & Order Cocktail Bar sits at Voetboogstraat 4, a few steps from Spui square, where bartending legends Vitaly Alekseyev and Sergej Platonov have built a reputation that extends well beyond the Netherlands. The bar earned Gault&Millau’s Cocktail Bar of the Year award in 2023, cementing its status among Amsterdam’s finest drinking establishments.
The name carries more weight than casual visitors might expect. Voetboogstraat translates to “crossbow street,” named for the Voetboogdoelen—a civic guard shooting range established here in 1458. Amsterdam’s crossbowmen trained on these grounds for nearly two centuries, defending the city during the Dutch Revolt against Spain. After the Eighty Years’ War ended in the mid-17th century, the guards’ role shifted from military to social. In 1650, the city permitted houses to be built on the former shooting ranges, creating the street that exists today.
Voetboogstraat’s history extends beyond medieval archers. The civic guards who once practiced here were wealthy Amsterdam citizens who commissioned group portraits from master painters. Frans Hals painted “The Meagre Company” for the Voetboogdoelen in 1633, a work now displayed in the Rijksmuseum. Bartholomeus van der Helst’s 1648 celebration painting commemorating the Peace of Münster hung in these very halls before moving to the museum.
The street gained notoriety in more recent decades for nightlife-related incidents, a reputation the bar’s founders chose to address directly through their establishment’s name and ethos. Where the area once needed bringing to order, Law & Order now serves as a peaceful haven for cocktail enthusiasts seeking quality over chaos.
Co-owner Vitaly Alekseyev, born in Latvia and trained in London before settling in Amsterdam, brings a no-nonsense approach to cocktail craft. The bar operates under a simple philosophy—”no bullshit”—focusing on exceptional drinks without pretension.
The signature Law & Order Manhattan layers bourbon with bianco vermouth, port, beetroot, and pecan, transforming a classic into something distinctly theirs. The Pink Pisco combines rhubarb, lemon, and egg white in a delicate balance. Pine Noir features Mediterranean gin with blackberry wine, maraschino, and ginger beer. Almost Hollywood Number 2, the bar’s best-seller, unites Voerman Vieux Dutch Superior Spiced Brandy with passion fruit-rose shrub, dry vermouth, and a Champagne-vanilla foam that contains neither cream nor egg whites.
The bartenders craft drinks to individual preferences. Regular guests often receive personalized creations based on conversations about favourite flavours. This commitment to customization has drawn industry professionals from around the world to study the team’s techniques.
Dim lighting, plush seating, and hip-hop from the golden era of the 1990s create an environment suited to both intimate conversations and lively gatherings. The bar seats fewer than thirty guests, making every visit feel personal. Embossed ice cubes add visual detail to carefully prepared glasses.
No dress code exists, though smart-casual fits the mood. The space fills quickly on weekends, particularly after 9 PM. Thursday evenings offer a sweet spot between weekday calm and weekend energy.

From Amsterdam Centraal Station, the walk takes approximately 15-20 minutes through the historic centre. Head south along Damrak, pass Dam Square, continue toward Spui, then turn onto Voetboogstraat. The street runs parallel to the famous shopping street Kalverstraat.
By tram, take lines 1, 2, or 5 to the Spui stop. From there, Voetboogstraat is a two-minute walk. Metro line M52 stops at Rokin, placing you within five minutes’ walking distance.
The narrow street can be easy to miss. The entrance is understated, marked by subtle signage. Look for number 4 between Spui and Heiligeweg.
Bicycle parking is available nearby, though secure locking is essential in this busy area.
The Civic Guards Gallery (Schuttersgalerij) on Kalverstraat displays 30 monumental paintings of Amsterdam’s historic militia groups, offering visual context for the neighbourhood’s military past. The Begijnhof, one of Amsterdam’s oldest hofjes, sits just around the corner. The Amsterdam Museum and the floating Flower Market are within a five-minute walk.
The Rasphuispoortje, a decorative gate from around 1600 that once marked the entrance to a house of correction, stands at the Heiligeweg end of Voetboogstraat. The nearby Helios building on the corner with Spui features the colourful “Zum Barbarossa” mosaic, a remnant from the area’s German-influenced past.
Can I make a reservation at Law & Order? No. The bar operates on a walk-in basis only. Arriving early, especially on weekends, improves your chances of securing a good seat.
What cocktails should I try first? Ask the bartenders for a recommendation based on your preferences. If you enjoy whiskey-based drinks, the Law & Order Manhattan showcases their style. For something lighter, the Pink Pisco offers refreshing complexity.
Is Law & Order suitable for large groups? The intimate space works best for small groups of two to four people. Larger parties may find themselves split across different seating areas.
Do they serve food? A small selection of bar snacks is available to accompany drinks. The focus remains firmly on cocktails.
Is it expensive? Prices align with quality cocktail bars in Amsterdam’s centre. Expect to pay €12-16 per cocktail. The craftsmanship and ingredient quality justify the cost.
What music plays at Law & Order? Old-school hip-hop and 90s rap set the mood. The playlist has become part of the bar’s identity.
