What is Hungry Birds?
Founded in 2013, Hungry Birds calls itself Amsterdam’s oldest food-tour company. Women started the company, and its guides go by the name “Mother Birds”. They lead relaxed walks in small groups, mixing traditional Dutch food with Indonesian and Surinamese dishes that reflect the city’s colonial history. Along the way, they stop at family-owned shops, market stalls, bakeries and cafés, where you can meet the people behind the food.
The company says Lonely Planet, Rick Steves and Fodor’s have recommended it. In 2023, it became the first Amsterdam food tour to earn Travelife sustainability certification.

What to expect
- Small groups of about eight people at most; at least three people must book for the tour to go ahead
- About seven to eight food stops on the Original tour, roughly the equivalent of a full brunch or lunch
- Dutch classics alongside Indonesian and Surinamese street food
- Drinks at some stops, though not all, so bring your own water bottle
- A relaxed 3–4 km walk, or about 5,000–7,000 steps
- All food and drinks included in the ticket price
Arrive hungry, but have a light snack beforehand. There’s plenty of food, and you won’t need lunch afterwards.
Dietary needs and allergies
Vegetarians are welcome, but mention it when you book and say whether you eat fish. If you don’t, you’ll miss one stop. Many tastings contain butter, flour or eggs, so Hungry Birds says it can’t properly cater for strict vegan or gluten-free diets. Be sure to report any allergy or dietary restriction in advance.
Meeting point and how to get there
The Original tour meets in front of McDonald’s at Albert Cuypstraat 75, next to Albert Cuyp Market in De Pijp. You’ll find the meeting point right across from De Pijp metro station. Coming from Amsterdam Centraal, take metro line 52 to De Pijp and leave via the Albert Cuypstraat exit. Hungry Birds sends the exact meeting details in your booking confirmation email.
