Is Hilton Amsterdam open?
No. Hilton Amsterdam on Apollolaan closed for a full renovation on 23 November 2025. That day, the hotel team announced that it had checked out its last guest and served its final breakfast after 63 years. The team said the hotel would return “renewed and reimagined.” The same message appeared on the hotel’s Instagram account.
We have not found an official reopening date. Listings on Hotels.com and Expedia show the property as closed from 23 November 2025 to 30 June 2027, with dates subject to change. A hotel-industry report from August 2026 said the refurbishment was due for completion in late 2026. Treat both as estimates until Hilton confirms a date.
While the hotel is closed, you cannot book rooms, eat at its restaurants, or use its bar, marina or garden terrace. If you still hold a reservation for dates during the closure, contact Hilton directly rather than relying on a third-party booking page.
Where is Hilton Amsterdam?
The hotel is at Apollolaan 138, 1077 BG Amsterdam. It sits in the Apollobuurt, a residential part of Oud-Zuid, on the Noorder Amstelkanaal where Apollolaan meets Minervalaan. This is the original Hilton on Apollolaan. Other Hilton-branded hotels in and around Amsterdam have different names and addresses, so check the address when you search.
The nearest tram stop is Apollolaan on Beethovenstraat, about 400 metres along Apollolaan from the hotel. Tram lines change from time to time, so check the GVB journey planner for current routes from Centraal Station or Amsterdam Zuid.
John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s Bed-In for Peace
The hotel is best known for the first Bed-In for Peace. After marrying in Gibraltar on 20 March 1969, John Lennon and Yoko Ono spent their honeymoon in the hotel’s presidential suite from 25 to 31 March 1969. They cleared most of the furniture from the room and invited the world’s press in every day from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. to talk about peace and the Vietnam War. Signs above the bed read “Hair Peace” and “Bed Peace.”
In 1969 the suite was room 902. It became 702 when the hotel renumbered its floors, and it was later marketed as the John and Yoko Suite. Lennon named the Amsterdam Hilton in “The Ballad of John and Yoko,” and the Bed-In remains the main reason music fans look the hotel up. The suite is closed along with the rest of the building, and we found no published plan for how it will be presented after the renovation.
Architecture and heritage
Hilton Amsterdam opened in 1962 as the first hotel in the Netherlands from an international chain. Prince Bernhard performed the official opening with Conrad Hilton present. The building was designed under H.A. Maaskant with the firm De Vlaming and Salm. Its V-shaped plan follows the two avenues that meet at the site, Apollolaan and Minervalaan, as described in Arcam’s architecture guide.
The hotel originally had 276 rooms. Before the closure it had 271. It is listed in Amsterdam’s heritage register, so the renovation must work within a protected post-war building.
What the hotel offered before closing
Before November 2025, the hotel had a private marina on the Noorder Amstelkanaal, waterside gardens, and a Garden Terrace. Its venues included Roberto’s Italian restaurant, the nautical-themed Half Moon Lounge bar, and Issimo, a café for coffee and pastries. Hilton has not said which facilities or venue names will return after the renovation, so treat this list as a record of the hotel before it closed, not a guide to what it will offer.
Exploring Oud-Zuid during the renovation
You can still see the building from Apollolaan and the canal side, but the site is closed to visitors. Museumplein, with the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Stedelijk Museum, lies north of the hotel, as do the Concertgebouw and Vondelpark.
