Café Lange Leo is a small brown café at Spuistraat 326, a minute’s walk from Spui square in central Amsterdam. What to expect inside
Lange Leo keeps the classic brown café look: a dark, wood-toned room with carefully matched colors and the bar running along one side. At the back is a raised lounge corner with a built-in corner sofa, the spot to settle in if you plan to stay a while. Behind the bar, staff face the door, and the café describes its approach as greeting everyone who walks in. Young and older regulars mix here, and the music is chosen to suit the crowd rather than a fixed genre.
The name is a small joke: lange is Dutch for “tall,” and the café’s own site confirms that yes, Leo is tall.
Heineken Star Serve, explained
Star Serve is Heineken’s global program for improving draft beer quality in bars. Bartenders at participating venues are trained in a five-step pour, and mystery visits check that the standard holds. On its website, Café Lange Leo says it is one of 140 hospitality venues in the Netherlands taking part; the page does not say which year that figure refers to.

The café has featured an Amsterdam witbier there: slightly hazy, golden, and brewed with wheat malt.

- Tram: Trams 2 and 12 stop at Spui on Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal, one block east of Spuistraat. From the stop it’s about a 2–3 minute walk.
- Metro: Rokin station is on line 52 (the North–South line). Walk west across Kalverstraat to Spui square, then continue onto Spuistraat. Allow about 5–7 minutes.
- On foot from Centraal: From Amsterdam Centraal Station, walk west to Martelaarsgracht, then follow Spuistraat south almost to its end. It takes about 15–20 minutes. You can also take tram 2 or 12 three stops to Spui.
- By bike: There are public bike racks around Spui. Use two locks, because bike theft is common in the city center.
