Architecture

Architecture in Amsterdam tells the city’s whole story at street level — medieval wooden houses on Begijnhof, the brick canal houses of the 17th-century Golden Age, the brick-and-organic-form Amsterdam School movement of the 1910s–30s, postwar modernism, and the new construction across the IJ in Noord. This archive collects the buildings and venues where architecture is the reason to visit: the Beurs van Berlage on Damrak (Hendrik Berlage’s 1903 modernist landmark), Het Schip in Spaarndammerbuurt (Michel de Klerk’s masterpiece of Amsterdam School social housing), Eye Filmmuseum’s angular form across the IJ in Noord, the Conservatorium Hotel’s converted neo-Renaissance bank building, and a long list of canal-house conversions where the original facade still defines the room. Each listing notes architect, completion date, and architectural style.
