About This Gem

Van Brienenhofje at a glance

Van Brienenhofje is a residential courtyard on Prinsengracht. Amsterdam City Archives records that merchant Arnout Jan van Brienen founded Van Brienens Hofje De Star in 1804 on the site of the former De Star brewery. City architect Abraham van der Hart designed the complex, and the first residents moved into its 26 homes and porter’s residence in May 1806.

Visiting responsibly

The courtyard remains a residential place, not a public attraction with guaranteed opening hours. Do not plan a visit around hours copied from map listings. If the entrance is closed, do not enter; if access is available, keep noise low, protect residents’ privacy, and follow any instructions posted at the entrance.

Address: Prinsengracht 89–133, Amsterdam. Historical information was checked against Amsterdam City Archives on 23 August 2026.
