A peaceful historic almshouse courtyard in the Jordaan, dating back to 1667 and offering a quiet escape from the city.

Local context
Suykerhofje is a tranquil 17th-century almshouse courtyard tucked away in Amsterdam’s Jordaan district, founded in 1667 by sugar merchant Hendrik Suijker. It offers a rare glimpse into Amsterdam’s historic hofje tradition, with a serene garden surrounded by historic almshouse dwellings.
Tucked away behind an unassuming entrance on Lindengracht, Suykerhofje offers visitors a glimpse into Amsterdam’s charitable past. This serene 17th-century hofje (courtyard) provides a peaceful escape from the bustling Jordaan neighborhood while showcasing the city’s tradition of caring for its vulnerable citizens.
Founded in 1667 by Pieter Jansz Suykerhof, this Protestant almshouse was established to provide housing for elderly widows aged 50 and older. The benefactor’s testament created a sanctuary for women who had few options in 17th-century society, offering them dignity and community in their later years.
The hofje consists of 19 small houses arranged in an L-shape around a tranquil courtyard. Built around 1670, the complex originally included a water pump and bleaching field. The deep entrance corridor from Lindengracht opens into this hidden world, where time seems to slow down among the well-maintained gardens and historic architecture.
Unlike museum pieces, Suykerhofje remains a living community. The hofje continues to provide housing exclusively for women, maintaining its original charitable purpose after more than 350 years. This continuity makes it particularly special among Amsterdam’s historic courtyards.
Situated in the heart of the Jordaan at Lindengracht 149-163, Suykerhofje exemplifies this neighborhood’s working-class history and strong sense of community. The area transformed from a 17th-century district for artisans and laborers into today’s trendy neighborhood while preserving gems like this hofje.
The hofje enjoyed special privileges as a Protestant godshuis (house of God), including exemption from certain taxes since 1752. Until the 1940s, residents received provisions in kind rather than money, maintaining traditions from centuries past. Recent restorations have preserved the hofje’s character while adding a commemorative stone above the entrance gate bearing the founder’s correct name.
The strong sense of community and mutual care among residents continues the hofje’s founding principles. Women living here support each other, creating a unique atmosphere of solidarity that has persisted through centuries of Amsterdam’s urban evolution.
Experience the quiet dignity of Suykerhofje, where Amsterdam’s charitable traditions live on in a beautifully preserved 17th-century setting—a true hidden gem that offers insight into the city’s caring heart.
