Best Time to Visit
When’s the best time to visit Amsterdam? I’ve been here in every season, and each has its appeal. If you’re planning to rent a bike from MacBike, though, the weather and crowds are worth thinking about.
Spring (April to May) is lovely, with tulips in bloom and generally mild weather that’s ideal for cycling. You’ll also miss the summer crowds. Spring showers are common, so bring a light raincoat.
Summer (June to August) is peak tourist season, and the warm weather and long days give you plenty of time to explore by bike. Just expect higher prices and busier bike lanes.
Fall (September to November) is my favorite time to cycle here. The crowds thin out, the air turns crisp, and the parks fill with autumn colors. It’s a lovely season for an easy ride along the canals or out into the countryside.
Winter (December to March) can be chilly, but the city has a cozy feel, especially around Christmas. Bundle up and you’ll be fine. A bike ride will help warm you up, too.
How to Get There
MacBike’s Central Station location is easy to reach, whether you’ve just arrived by train or are already exploring the city center.
Arriving at Amsterdam Central Station by train? MacBike is just a short walk away. Exit on the city center side (south), and you’ll find it to your right. Look for the distinctive red and white logo; it’s hard to miss.
Coming from Schiphol Airport is simple, too. Take a direct train to Amsterdam Central Station, which runs every 10-15 minutes, and you’ll reach MacBike in about 20 minutes. Even I can manage that without getting lost.
If you’re already in town, you can reach MacBike Central Station on foot or by public transport. It’s at De Ruijterkade 34b, right next to the ferry terminal. Follow the ferry signs and you’ll spot it.
Tram lines 2, 11, 12, 13, and 17 all stop at Central Station. From there, it’s only a short walk to MacBike.
One bit of advice from someone who knows the area: it can get busy around the station, so give yourself a little extra time to find MacBike. It’s worth it. Once you’re on your bike, you can leave the crowds behind and explore at your own pace.
And don’t forget to bring valid ID and a credit card for the deposit. I learned that one the hard way on my first visit.
