The name “Kopstootbar” literally translates to “headbutt bar,” which sounds a bit rough. But it refers to the traditional Dutch pairing of a beer and a shot of genever, a juniper spirit often compared to gin. And they do it well here.
The interior is easy on the eyes: dark wood, low lighting and quirky decorations to keep you looking around. It’s a good spot for a proper chat with your mates, or to meet new people over darts. The music’s usually just right, too, without drowning out the conversation.

After a livelier scene? Friday and Saturday nights are your best bet. Locals and visitors fill the bar, and it can get packed, so give them a heads-up if you’re coming with a big group.
Kopstootbar closes on Sundays and Mondays, so you’ll have to find another spot for a Sunday Funday. Still, there are plenty of good reasons to make your Amsterdam stay a little longer.
The bar opens at 6 PM (18:00) from Tuesday through Saturday. On weekdays, it closes at 1 AM; on Fridays and Saturdays, it stays open until 3 AM. Whether you’re an early bird or a night owl, there’s time for a visit.
In the colder months, Kopstootbar makes a cozy stop out of the rain and chill. There’s something nice about sipping genever while the weather does its thing outside. The dim, intimate interior feels especially inviting on a gloomy evening.

How to Get There
Kopstootbar is at Marnixstraat 429, 1017 PK Amsterdam, on the edge of the Jordaan. It’s a lovely neighborhood to explore while you’re in the area.
Coming from Amsterdam Centraal, the main train station? Take tram 13 or 17 and get off at Westermarkt. From there, walk along Marnixstraat to the bar. Look for the Kopstootbar sign outside.
If you’re cycling, it’s about a 10-minute ride from Centraal. Head west along Prins Hendrikkade, turn left onto Singel, then follow it to Marnixstraat. Turn right and keep an eye out for the bar.
Walking from Centraal takes about 20 to 25 minutes. It’s a pleasant route through the city center, with some of Amsterdam’s famous canals along the way.
A word of warning: parking around here can be a bit of a nightmare. If you’re driving, park farther out and walk or take public transport instead. It’ll save you a headache, and leave room for any genever-induced ones later.
If you’re using Google Maps or another navigation app, double-check that it’s taking you to the right Marnixstraat. There’s another street with a similar name elsewhere in town, and you don’t want to end up there by mistake. Check the postcode, too.
Once you’re nearby, look out for the bar’s sign. The storefront isn’t flashy, which is part of the charm, but it’s easy to walk past if you’re not paying attention. If you reach Leidseplein, you’ve gone too far.
