Hotel De Hallen is a four-star hotel inside a former tram depot at Bellamyplein 47 in Amsterdam Oud-West. It suits travelers who want character, a residential neighborhood and easy tram access rather than a hotel in the busiest part of the canal ring. The hotel shares the protected De Hallen complex with Foodhallen, FilmHallen, an OBA public library branch and independent shops, so food, films and rainy-day plans are all under the same roof.

It is less suitable if you want a hotel gym, a dinner restaurant on site or a short walk to Dam Square. The restaurant serves breakfast and lunch, the bar stays open into the evening, and the city center is a tram ride away.

Industrial Heritage and Modern Design

The hotel is in the Westelijke Tramremise, built in phases between 1901 and 1928. From 1902, electric trams came in and out of the depot from Bellamyplein. The site later became a central workshop for Amsterdam’s public-transport company, GVB, until 1996. After that, it housed the Amsterdam Public Transport Museum’s heritage trams and several small creative businesses until the complex was vacated in 2005.

The building stood empty for years before renovation began in 2013. Hotel De Hallen opened in 2014 in Hall 1, which it shares with the library. The conversion kept many industrial features, including brick walls, tall ceilings and steel roof structures, and the hotel adds an urban-vintage interior with design pieces and artwork throughout.

Rooms and Suites

Every room has a COCO-MAT bed. Most room types can be booked with a king-size bed or twin beds. Standard rooms measure about 22 square meters and the Junior Suite about 29. Booking platforms list air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, sound-insulated walls and laptop-size safes as standard.

Breakfast and Lunch at Remise47

Remise47 is the hotel’s urban bistro, serving French and international dishes. It seats 55 people inside, 24 at the bar and about 100 on the terrace facing Bellamyplein. Guests and non-guests are both welcome.

• Breakfast: buffet and à la carte options, charged separately from most room rates. Booking platforms list it from 07:00 to 10:30 on weekdays and until 11:00 on weekends.
• Lunch: the restaurant lists lunch daily from 12:00 to 14:00.
• Bar: the red bar stays open until 22:00 for drinks after lunch service ends.
• Dogs: not allowed in the restaurant.

Remise47 does not serve dinner, so plan your evening meal somewhere else. The easiest choice is Foodhallen, a short walk inside the same complex. It has 19 independent food stands and three bars and opens daily from 12:00 to 23:00, with no reservations. Check the Remise47 website for current menus, since its hours have changed over time.

Oud-West Location and Transport

The hotel is behind Kinkerstraat, next to the Ten Katemarkt street market, which runs Monday to Saturday from 09:00 to 18:00. The area is mostly residential and busier with locals than with tour groups. Guests often mention that it feels calmer than the center while still having plenty to do nearby.

• Tram: lines 7 and 17 stop at Ten Katestraat and Bilderdijkstraat, a short walk away. From Amsterdam Centraal, tram 17 toward Osdorp runs directly into Oud-West.

• Bike: the hotel rents bikes, and there’s a monitored bicycle garage for about 1,300 bikes beneath De Hallen.
• Car: a paid municipal garage sits under the complex, with its entrance at Bellamyplein 41. It’s open daily from 07:00 to 01:00 and has a lift and accessible parking spaces.

Service changes and track work are common in Amsterdam, so check the GVB journey planner on the day you travel.

Facilities and Services

The hotel keeps its services simple. Travel booking platforms list a 24-hour reception, a lift, laundry facilities, room service, accessible facilities and free Wi-Fi throughout the building. The lobby has several seating areas where you can order food and drinks at any time of day.

For meetings and events, the Glass Cabin seats up to 20 people and has a smart TV and flipchart. The lobby and restaurant can host larger events of up to 100 guests. The hotel has also been an official wedding venue since 2014.

Sustainability Credentials

Hotel De Hallen participates in Green Key, the largest sustainability label for tourism and recreation in the Netherlands. Its owner, Vondel Hotels, says it aims for Green Key Gold at all of its hotels. Its stated practices include using energy and water carefully, eco-friendly cleaning, recycling, and choosing organic and quality-labeled products. Best Time to Stay

From spring to early autumn, the terrace on Bellamyplein is the main draw, and a morning walk to Vondelpark is easy. Summer weekends bring the most visitors to De Hallen, so book early if you plan to eat at Foodhallen or see a film on a Saturday night.

In late autumn and winter, the hotel’s location becomes a practical advantage. Food, cinema, the library and the shops are all indoors next door, which makes cold or wet days easier to plan. Visit Ten Katemarkt from Monday to Saturday before it closes at 18:00. On Sundays, stick to the indoor venues in the complex.
