Hotel 717, also known as Hotel Seven One Seven, is a small luxury boutique hotel in a listed canal house at Prinsengracht 717, in Amsterdam’s UNESCO-listed Canal Belt. It opened in 1997 and describes itself as the first luxury boutique hotel in the Netherlands. The hotel is now changing hands. On 17 September 2026, The Zetter Collection announced that it will reopen as The Zetter 717 Amsterdam, a 24-room five-star hotel, in early 2027.
Status as of 24 September 2026: Hotel 717’s website now says “Hotel 717 is becoming The Zetter 717, Amsterdam.” The Zetter’s press release gives early 2027 for the opening, but The Zetter’s own Amsterdam page has listed December 2026. Neither source gave an exact reopening date. Before you book a stay at Hotel 717, confirm your travel dates with The Zetter or on the Hotel 717 website. Third-party booking sites may still show availability that doesn’t reflect the changeover.

Hotel 717 becoming The Zetter 717
The Zetter Group runs The Zetter Hotel and The Zetter Townhouses in Clerkenwell and Marylebone in London. The Amsterdam hotel will be its first property outside the UK. The redesign is by James Thurstan Waterworth, whose studio Thurstan also designed The Zetter Bloomsbury. It uses aged brass, reclaimed timber, antique mirrors and heavy textiles, and aims to keep the building’s historic fabric.
General Manager Yara Al Hattouni, who is based in Amsterdam, will run the hotel. The shared spaces will change the most:

A historic canal house on Prinsengracht
The rear house dates from the 17th century, during the Dutch Golden Age. In 1810 a sugar merchant built the 19th-century front house you see from the canal today. He chose the Empire style, the Napoleonic look of the Arc de Triomphe, and the facade has survived largely intact for more than two centuries.
After the merchant died, a series of social organisations used the building. For many years it was the headquarters of the Wilhelminahuis, a non-profit founded on the initiative of Queen Wilhelmina. The building was renovated in 1996 and opened in 1997 as a boutique hotel, modelled on the private guest houses then popular in Scotland. A major renovation followed around 2022.

Location and getting there
Prinsengracht 717 is on the southern stretch of the canal ring, between Leidsestraat and Spiegelstraat. The Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum are within walking distance, and Leidseplein is about five minutes away on foot. Dam Square, the Royal Palace, the Jordaan and the Anne Frank House are further north and can be reached on foot or by tram.
- From Schiphol by bus: bus 397 runs from Schiphol Plaza to Leidseplein, about a five-minute walk from the hotel.
- From Schiphol by car: the hotel has offered a private limousine pick-up, which you arrange with staff in advance. Taxis can drop you at the door.
- By tram: the nearest stop is Prinsengracht, and trams 2 and 12 run directly to Amsterdam Centraal.
- By car: staff meet you out front and point you to parking. Parking is self-service and costs extra.
