Is citizenM Amstel a good place to stay?

Yes, if location and transport matter more to you than floor space. The hotel sits between the Amstel, Royal Theater Carré and the Plantage, and the metro below Weesperplein reaches Amsterdam Centraal in a few stops. The tradeoff is a small, standardised room with no choice of bed layout and no extra beds.

Rooms and in-room technology

All 88 rooms follow the citizenM template. A wall-to-wall XL king bed sits beneath a wide window, with a high-pressure rain shower, a widescreen smart TV that streams via Chromecast, and soundproof windows. A bedside tablet (called the MoodPad when the hotel opened) controls the blinds, lighting, temperature and TV. Several guest reviews single out the automated blackout blinds, which help in summer when the sun rises very early.

Because there is one room type, you are not choosing between categories or paying for upgrades. Views still depend on where your room is in the building, so don’t assume a river or street outlook. At opening, the artwork in the rooms was curated by Foam Editions, the gallery of Amsterdam’s Foam photography museum, with work by Isabelle Wenzel, Sanja Marusic and Lisette Appeldorn.

Booking platforms list free Wi-Fi. Marriott’s own page says Bonvoy members get complimentary in-room internet when they book direct, so check the rate terms if connectivity is critical for work.

Accessibility information is inconsistent. Marriott’s overview lists mobility-accessible rooms, a roll-in shower and grab rails, while its rooms page shows no accessible rooms available to book. The building, living room and canteenM

The hotel occupies a 1928 building in the Amsterdam School style, converted by citizenM’s Amsterdam design partner Concrete. The original doors were restored, and when the hotel opened, canal- and water-themed artworks by Freudenthal Verhagen filled the eight main street-level windows. Self-service check-in kiosks replace a traditional reception desk, though a team is on hand around the clock.

The ground-floor living room is the hotel’s shared lounge and workspace. It was fitted with Vitra furniture, bookcases and custom artworks by Pinar & Viola, who also painted the ceiling. The same floor holds an outdoor courtyard, the collectionM shop, and four societyM meeting rooms that each took up to 14 people at opening. Artwork and room layouts can change over time, so treat these as the design at launch rather than a guaranteed current display.

canteenM runs 24/7. Breakfast is a hot-and-cold buffet from 06:00 to 11:00, and every breakfast purchase includes unlimited barista-made coffee in that window. Later in the day it serves salads, sandwiches from the vitrine and warm dishes, then works as a bar with cocktails and beer on tap in the evening. Breakfast is charged separately on many rates, so compare a room-only price with a breakfast-inclusive one.

Location and getting around

Sarphatistraat 47 is in Weesperbuurt, part of the Centrum district, on the east bank of the Amstel. Marriott places it inside the historic canal ring. It is close to Amsterdam Oost but not in it, and it is a short walk to the gardens, museums and leafy streets of the Plantage neighbourhood.

Metro and tram

Weesperplein is served by metro lines 51, 53 and 54, which all run north to Amsterdam Centraal. The hotel estimates about 10 minutes to Centraal by metro. Trams also stop at Weesperplein, and Wibautstraat metro station is about a 7-minute walk away.

From Schiphol Airport

Take a train from Schiphol to Amsterdam Zuid and change to metro 51 towards Centraal, getting off at Weesperplein. Or take the train to Amsterdam Centraal and ride metro 51, 53 or 54 south to Weesperplein. The hotel puts the trip at about 30 minutes by train or taxi. There is no hotel shuttle, and it’s worth checking a live journey planner for engineering works before you travel.

Arriving by car

The hotel has no on-site parking or EV charging. The nearest listed option is Q-Park Amsterdam Weesperplein, which is paid and not operated by the hotel. Check Q-Park’s current rates before you drive into the centre.

• Late check-out: available for a fee, subject to availability. Third-party listings show 29 to 39 euros, so confirm the current charge at the hotel.
• Breakfast: not included on every rate. Compare the per-guest cost with cafés near Weesperplein before adding it.
