Nestled in the vibrant De Pijp neighborhood of Amsterdam, Café Berkhout is a charming little gem that’s become a favorite hangout for both locals and tourists alike. I stumbled upon this place quite by accident during my last trip to the Dutch capital, and boy, am I glad I did!
The moment you step inside, you’re greeted by a cozy, warm atmosphere that just screams “gezellig” – that untranslatable Dutch word that means something like cozy, convivial, and comfortable all rolled into one. The interior is classic Amsterdam brown café style, with dark wood furnishings, vintage posters on the walls, and soft lighting that makes you want to settle in for hours.
But what really sets Café Berkhout apart is its prime location right across from the Heineken Experience. It’s the perfect spot to grab a cold one after touring the brewery – and trust me, you’ll want one! The outdoor seating area is particularly lovely on sunny days, giving you a front-row seat to watch the hustle and bustle of Stadhouderskade.
The menu here is pretty standard Dutch pub grub, but done really well. Think hearty sandwiches, crispy bitterballen (Dutch meat croquettes that are absolutely addictive), and of course, plenty of beer on tap. And speaking of beer, they pour a mean pint of Heineken here – fresh and frothy, just the way it should be.
Alright, let’s break down what makes Café Berkhout such a standout spot:
1. Location, location, location: Situated right across from the Heineken Experience, it’s the perfect pre- or post-tour pitstop.
2. Outdoor seating: There’s nothing quite like sipping a cold beer while people-watching on a busy Amsterdam street.
3. Friendly service: The staff here are top-notch, always ready with a smile and a recommendation.
4. Great for groups: Whether you’re traveling with friends or family, there’s plenty of space to accommodate larger parties.
5. Moderate noise level: It’s lively without being overwhelming, so you can actually hear your companions talk.
6. Kid-friendly: Unlike some Amsterdam bars, this place welcomes families with open arms.
7. Late-night hours: Open until 1 AM most nights (and even later on weekends), it’s perfect for night owls.
8. Vegetarian options: While it’s not a veggie paradise, there are enough meat-free choices to keep everyone happy.
9. No reservations needed: Just rock up and grab a table – perfect for spontaneous plans.
10. Authentic Amsterdam experience: This isn’t some tourist trap; it’s a real local joint where you can get a taste of genuine Amsterdam life.
Now, when’s the best time to hit up Café Berkhout? Well, that kinda depends on what you’re after.
If you’re looking for a lively atmosphere with a buzzing crowd, evenings are your best bet, especially on weekends. The place really comes alive after dark, with locals and tourists mingling over beers and bites. It’s a great spot to start your night out in Amsterdam – just don’t blame me if you end up staying longer than planned!
But personally, I prefer late afternoon visits. There’s something magical about that golden hour light streaming through the windows, catching the condensation on your beer glass just so. Plus, it’s usually a bit quieter then, so you can really soak in the atmosphere and maybe even strike up a conversation with the friendly bartenders.
If you’re pairing your visit with the Heineken Experience (and why wouldn’t you? ), I’d recommend hitting up Café Berkhout afterwards. There’s nothing quite like discussing your newfound beer knowledge over a fresh pint!
During summer months, aim for a sunny afternoon to make the most of that outdoor seating. But even in Amsterdam’s notoriously rainy weather, Café Berkhout’s cozy interior makes for a perfect shelter from the storm.
And here’s a pro tip: if you’re an early bird, they open at 10 AM most days (11 AM on weekends). It’s a great spot for a leisurely brunch or an early lunch before you start your day of sightseeing.
Getting to Café Berkhout is a breeze, which is part of its charm. It’s located at Stadhouderskade 77, right in the heart of Amsterdam’s bustling De Pijp neighborhood.
If you’re coming from the city center, you’ve got a few options:
1. Tram: This is probably the easiest way. Hop on tram 24 from Central Station and get off at the Marie Heinekenplein stop. The café will be right across the street. Easy peasy!
2. Metro: Take line 52 to De Pijp station. From there, it’s about a 5-minute walk to Café Berkhout.
3. Bus: Lines 357 and N57 stop right outside at the Stadhouderskade stop.
4. Bike: This is Amsterdam after all! There are plenty of bike rental places in the city center, and it’s a pleasant 15-20 minute ride to the café.
5. Walking: If you’re staying in the city center and fancy a stroll, it’s about a 30-minute walk. Just head south on Utrechtsestraat and you’ll hit Stadhouderskade.
And of course, if you’re visiting the Heineken Experience, you literally just need to cross the street. You can’t miss it!
One word of caution though – parking in this area can be a bit of a nightmare. If you’re driving, I’d recommend finding a park and ride on the outskirts of the city and taking public transport in. Trust me, it’ll save you a headache (and probably some euros too).
Alright, so you’re all set to visit Café Berkhout. Here are some insider tips to make your experience even better:
1. Try the bitterballen: These little Dutch meat croquettes are the perfect accompaniment to a cold beer. They’re crispy on the outside, gooey on the inside, and utterly delicious.
2. Don’t be shy: The Dutch are known for their directness, and that extends to service too. If you need something, just ask – the staff are super friendly.
3. Bring cash: While they do accept cards, it’s always good to have some cash on hand, especially for smaller purchases.
4. Learn a few Dutch phrases: A simple” Dank je wel” (thank you) or” Proost” (cheers) goes a long way in endearing you to the locals.
5. Try the local beers: Sure, Heineken is great, but don’t be afraid to branch out. Ask the bartender for recommendations – they know their stuff!
6. Pace yourself: Dutch beers can be stronger than what you’re used to. Take it slow and enjoy!
7. Use the bathroom before you leave: Trust me on this one. Public toilets in Amsterdam can be few and far between.
8. Don’t forget to tip: While not as expected as in some countries, a small tip (around 10%) for good service is appreciated.
9. Check out the specials board: They often have daily specials that aren’t on the regular menu.
10. Strike up a conversation: The Dutch are generally very friendly and speak excellent English. You might just make some new friends!
11. Try to avoid peak tourist season if possible: Amsterdam can get crazy busy in summer. Spring and fall are lovely times to visit.
12. Take photos, but be respectful: It’s a great spot for Instagram-worthy shots, but remember it’s a working café, not a photo studio.
13. If you’re a sports fan, ask if there’s a game on: They sometimes show important matches on TV.
14. Don’t rush: This is a place to relax and enjoy. Take your time, soak in the atmosphere, and enjoy a slice of Amsterdam life.
