Cafe Bar The Pint is a small, family-run pub at Oudezijds Achterburgwal 116 in De Wallen, Amsterdam’s Red Light District, known for rock-and-roll memorabilia and late hours. It is listed as open from 19:00 to 03:00 Sunday to Thursday.

Friday and Saturday nights work differently. Since April 2023, the city has required bars in the core of the Red Light District to stop admitting guests at 01:00 and close by 02:00 on weekend nights, so arrive early if you are going at the weekend.

What kind of bar The Pint is

The Pint is a narrow neighbourhood pub, not a cocktail lounge or club. In its own listing, the bar says it has been run by the same family for four generations and has traded for more than 80 years. It also describes itself as the only avondzaak (late-evening bar) in the area. The Oudezijds Achterburgwal business association names Patrick Lefevere as the owner and notes that the building has been in his family for three generations.

The rock-and-roll reputation has a real source. A 2020 profile in Houstonia Magazine described bartender “Big Franky,” who had toured with the Rolling Stones. It mentioned photos and memorabilia of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, along with pictures of other musicians who had visited after Amsterdam shows. Staff and decor may have changed since then, but the music-bar identity is what sets The Pint apart from the neon-lit bars nearby.

Visitor reviews mostly mention the same things: it’s cosy and small, and the staff are friendly. Expect a tight room where you’ll probably end up talking to whoever is next to you at the bar. It suits a couple, a solo traveller or a small group better than a big party.

Opening hours and the 1 AM weekend rule

Listing sites give The Pint’s hours as 19:00–03:00 from Sunday to Thursday and 19:00–04:00 on Friday and Saturday. The bar’s municipal licence-renewal application, received on 27 November 2025, lists it as an alcohol-serving avondzaak with maximum permitted hours of 09:00–03:00 Sunday to Thursday and 09:00–04:00 Friday and Saturday. It lists no terrace. Those are the legal maximums in the permit, not the hours the bar actually keeps.

A separate city rule overrides the permit at weekends. Under Amsterdam’s weekend closing-time decree for the core Wallen area, bars in the zone must close by 02:00 on weekend nights “even if the business has an operating permit with longer hours.” A companion rule stops alcohol-serving venues admitting new guests after 01:00. The zone is centred on the Oudezijds Achterburgwal and Oudezijds Voorburgwal north of Damstraat, Oude Doelenstraat and Oude Hoogstraat, where The Pint is located. The measures started on 1 April 2023 and were extended until 1 April 2027.

Weekend limits come from the City of Amsterdam’s core-Wallen decree, valid until 1 April 2027 unless changed.

That makes The Pint most useful on weeknights. Older articles that describe it as open until 4 or 5 AM were written before these rules took effect.

Tips for visiting

• Arrive early at weekends: doors close to new guests at 01:00 on Friday and Saturday nights, and a full bar may not have room for you just before then.
• Keep groups small: the room is narrow, and there is no terrace to overflow onto.
• Call ahead: for a very late or holiday visit, check hours on +31 20 626 6343.
• Finish drinks inside: drinking alcohol on the street is banned in the Red Light District, and smoking cannabis on its streets has been banned since 2023, with a €100 fine.

Getting there and getting home

The closest metro station is Nieuwmarkt, served by lines 51, 53 and 54. Amsterdam Centraal is also within walking distance. Getting home is the harder part. Recent timetables show the last metros leaving Nieuwmarkt shortly after midnight, so by the time The Pint closes, you’ll be walking, cycling, taking a taxi or catching a GVB night bus.

GVB’s night buses run from Amsterdam Centraal to other parts of the city roughly once an hour, between about 00:30 and 07:00. Check the departure time for your line before you leave the bar, because missing one can mean a long wait. If you’re cycling, lock your bike to something fixed. The canal-side streets around the bar get crowded at night.

Nearby bars for later or different nights

Warmoesstraat is outside the zone where the early weekend closing applies, so bars there can use their full permit hours. Here are some options if The Pint is full, closed, or not what you want:

• Café De Zeemeeuw, Zeedijk 102: another small, no-frills dive bar on the edge of the district.
• Red Light Bar, Oudezijds Achterburgwal 61: busier cocktail bar on the same canal.
• Café Hoppe, Spui 18–20: a historic brown café dating from 1670, for an earlier, quieter drink across the old centre.
