Bunsbar brings authentic Asian street food to Albert Cuyp market through their specialized food truck operation. This local favorite has mastered the art of the bao bun, transforming these traditional steamed pillows into substantial, burger-like meals that satisfy both adventurous eaters and comfort food seekers.
Founded by Anique after extensive travels across Asia, Bunsbar represents more than just another food truck – it’s a culmination of culinary research and genuine passion for Asian street food culture. Each bao bun is steamed to order, achieving that signature cloud-like texture that distinguishes authentic bao from imitations.
The menu showcases a thoughtful balance between traditional Asian flavors and Amsterdam sensibilities. Their Korean fried chicken bao delivers authentic gochujang heat tempered with cooling cucumber pickles, while the BBQ pulled pork option bridges Eastern and Western barbecue traditions. Vegetarian options like Indo jackfruit ensure inclusive dining without compromising on flavor intensity.
What elevates Bunsbar above typical street food is their commitment to quality ingredients and proper technique. Proteins are marinated overnight, vegetables are prepped fresh daily, and each sauce is crafted in-house. This attention to detail has earned them a devoted following among market regulars and food enthusiasts.
Signature Bao Buns: Steamed to order for optimal texture, filled with options ranging from Korean fried chicken to Indo jackfruit. Each bun maintains the perfect balance of soft exterior and substantial filling.
Korean Fried Chicken: Their standout item features double-fried chicken glazed with authentic gochujang sauce, topped with cabbage slaw, sriracha mayo, spring onions, pickled cucumber, and sesame seeds.
Halal Options: All chicken served is halal-certified, making Bunsbar accessible to Muslim diners while maintaining exceptional quality standards.
Crispy Wontons: Hand-folded daily, these Chinese-style dumplings come filled with seasoned chicken or vegetables, served with house-made dipping sauces.
Spring Rolls & Sides: Traditional Vietnamese-style spring rolls and Asian salads complement the bao offerings, creating complete meal options.
House Sauces: From tangy hoisin to spicy sriracha mayo, each sauce is carefully balanced to enhance rather than mask the primary flavors.
Catering Services: Bunsbar offers event catering, bringing their food truck experience to private parties, corporate events, and festivals throughout Amsterdam.
Late Morning (10:30-11:30): Beat the lunch rush while enjoying freshly prepared items. The full menu is available from opening, making this ideal for early lunchers.
Weekday Afternoons (14:00-16:00): Post-lunch hours offer shorter queues while maintaining the market’s energy. Perfect for a substantial snack between meals.
Saturday Market Days: Arrive before noon for the full Albert Cuyp experience. The market buzzes with weekend shoppers, but popular items may sell out by mid-afternoon.
Summer Season: Pleasant weather allows for enjoying your bao while strolling the market or in nearby Sarphatipark. The food truck’s outdoor setup shines in good weather.
Avoid: Late afternoons (16:00-17:00) when popular items often sell out. The truck closes promptly at 17:00 with the market.
Exact Location: Albert Cuypstraat near number 269, positioned toward the Van Woustraat end of the market. Look for the distinctive food truck with Asian-inspired graphics.
By Tram: Lines 3, 12, and 24 stop at Albert Cuypstraat. The food truck sits approximately 200 meters from the tram stop, walking toward Van Woustraat.
By Metro: De Pijp station (Line 52) is a 5-minute walk. Exit toward Albert Cuypstraat, enter the market from the Ferdinand Bolstraat side.
By Bike: Ample bike parking at market entrances. The Vijzelstraat bike lane connects directly from city center in 10 minutes.
From Museum Quarter: A pleasant 15-minute walk through De Pijp neighborhood. Follow Stadhouderskade east, turn south at Ceintuurbaan.
Market Navigation: Enter from either Ferdinand Bolstraat or Van Woustraat. Bunsbar typically parks in the same spot daily, making it easy to find for repeat visitors.
