Anantara Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky is a five-star, 402-room hotel at Dam 9, directly facing the Royal Palace and the National Monument on Amsterdam’s Dam Square. History and the Wintergarden

Polish-born tailor Adolph Wilhelm Krasnapolsky bought the building in 1865 and opened a restaurant there in 1866. Between 1879 and 1880 he added rooms and a palm-filled conservatory with a cupola, designed by architect G.B. Salm and built with glass, steel and electric lighting. By the 1883 International Colonial Exhibition, the business had become a 125-room hotel with hot water and telephones in each room, which was unusual in Amsterdam at the time.

That conservatory survives as the Wintergarden, where the hotel serves its buffet breakfast under the original glass roof. It also hosts themed Sunday brunches through the year, including Christmas Day and Boxing Day editions. The building is a listed national monument (rijksmonument). It spent decades under the Golden Tulip and NH brands before Minor Hotels rebranded it as an Anantara on 20 April 2022, so older reviews and some booking sites still use the NH Collection name.

Rooms and suites

Standard rooms run from 26 to 50 sqm and come in double, triple and quadruple layouts, which helps families and friends traveling together. Depending on the category, you can choose a terrace or a view over the square, the canals or the rooftops. The hotel describes the décor as a mix of classic and mid-century design, with parquet floors, geometric lighting and leather headboards.

Executive rooms and suites range from 35 to 150 sqm, and some have recently been renovated. The top categories are a Royal Suite with separate living and dining rooms and a two-bedroom Presidential Suite with a roof terrace. If views of the Royal Palace matter to you, ask for them when you book instead of assuming every front-facing room has one.

Restaurants and bars

• The White Room: the hotel’s Michelin-starred fine-dining room, decorated in white and gold, serving modern dishes built on local produce. It is open for dinner on selected days, so reserve ahead.
• Grand Café Krasnapolsky: the all-day café fronting Dam Square, known for afternoon tea, patisserie and its Champagne Room.
• Bar The Tailor: a cocktail bar named for the founder’s first trade.
• Wintergarden: breakfast buffet with live cooking stations, plus seasonal brunch events.

Anantara Spa and fitness

The Anantara Spa has three single treatment rooms, a couple’s room, a traditional sauna, a steam room, an infrared experience and indoor and outdoor relaxation areas. Treatments mix Thai massage traditions with Dutch skincare partners such as Hannah and Bloomeffects. Access is limited to guests aged 16 and over, swimwear is required and photography is not allowed. Guests in non-Executive rooms pay EUR 25 per room for wet-area access. There is no swimming pool.

The gym uses Technogym cardio and strength equipment and includes free weights and a 360° rotating climbing wall. Personal training sessions can be booked.

Location: what is nearby and the trade-offs

The hotel faces the Royal Palace and the National Monument, with the Kalverstraat shopping street, De Bijenkorf and the Nieuwe Kerk a short walk away. The Anne Frank House, the Jordaan and the canal belt are easy to reach on foot. For the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and Vondelpark in the Museum Quarter, take a tram or the metro from nearby Rokin station.

The back of the hotel meets the Oudezijds Voorburgwal canal, where the hotel has its own boat pier, on the edge of the Red Light District (De Wallen). Dam Square is busy with crowds, street performers and events late into the evening. That’s ideal if you want to be in the middle of things. If you’re sensitive to noise or want a residential feel, you may prefer a quieter canal-belt or Museum Quarter hotel, or a room facing the courtyard or rooftops.

Best times to stay

• Winter: the 15th Amsterdam Light Festival runs from 26 November 2026 to 17 January 2027, with light artworks along the canals in the center. The Wintergarden holiday brunches fall in late December.
• Spring: Keukenhof opens from 18 March to 9 May 2027. It’s about 40 km southwest of the city, so plan it as a day trip.
• Summer: long daylight hours make it easy to explore the old center on foot. Expect peak crowds and peak room rates.

Getting there from Schiphol and Centraal

From Schiphol Airport, direct NS trains reach Amsterdam Centraal in about 14–17 minutes, with frequent departures during the day. From Centraal, the hotel is roughly a 10-minute walk down Damrak, or one short tram ride. The hotel estimates a taxi from Schiphol usually takes around 30 minutes, depending on traffic. If you arrive by car, the hotel offers secure indoor parking and a valet service.
