Heritage & origins

Nieuw‑West was born from Cornelis van Eesteren’s visionary General Extension Plan of 1935, which aimed to alleviate Amsterdam’s post‑war housing shortage by creating garden cities that offered light, air and space. Between 1948 and the 1960s, the Western Garden Cities—Slotermeer, Geuzenveld, Slotervaart, Overtoomse Veld and Osdorp—emerged from reclaimed polder land. Workers excavated the 30‑metre‑deep Sloterplas lake to obtain sand for elevating the surrounding neighborhoods, leaving behind a vast recreational waterbody at the district’s centre.

In the 1990s, newer quarters such as Nieuw Sloten, De Aker and Oostoever were added. The borough took its current form in 2010 when Osdorp, Geuzenveld‑Slotermeer and Slotervaart merged into Amsterdam Nieuw‑West. Ongoing renewal projects continue to modernize housing and infrastructure while preserving the green spaces that define the area.
