Shopping mall
Amsterdam mostly avoided the American-style enclosed shopping mall — the city’s retail centre is its streets, the Negen Straatjes, Haarlemmerstraat, the Albert Cuypmarkt, PC Hooftstraat. Where larger retail concentrations exist, they tend to be department stores (De Bijenkorf on Dam Square, Magna Plaza in the former post office on Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal) or thematic shopping centres (Kalvertoren on Kalverstraat, Magna Plaza, the contemporary Stadshart Amstelveen just outside the ring). This archive collects all of them: department stores, indoor shopping centres, and the larger retail clusters that function the way a mall does in other cities. Each listing notes anchor tenants, opening hours, and the right metro or tram stop.
