Amsterdam is one of the most LGBTQ-welcoming cities in Europe — the Netherlands was the first country to legalise same-sex marriage in 2001, and the city’s Reguliersdwarsstraat has been the spine of gay nightlife for decades. This archive collects venues with a confirmed LGBTQ-friendly stance: long-standing gay bars and clubs in the Reguliersdwarsstraat area, mixed-crowd cocktail bars across Centrum and De Pijp, hotels and restaurants whose staff training and public statements back up the rainbow flag at the door, and venues that actively host Pride events each summer. Pride canal parade weekend (typically the first Saturday in August) draws around half a million people and remains one of Amsterdam’s signature celebrations.
