Who this hotel suits

Residence Inn is Marriott’s long-stay brand, and this property opened in January 2018 as its first in the Netherlands. The idea is a middle ground between a hotel and an apartment: you get daily breakfast, a front desk and housekeeping, plus a kitchen so you don’t have to eat out for every meal.

• Good fit: stays of a week or more, work trips, couples who want space to cook, travellers with a dog, and anyone who wants a pool and gym without paying extra.
• Less ideal: first-time visitors who want to walk out the door into the canal ring, and families who need a cot or extra bed (third-party booking data says neither is available).

Guest ratings back this up. Expedia reviewers give the hotel 8.8/10 overall and 9.2 for cleanliness, but only 7.4 for location. The usual complaint is distance: the area is quiet and the harbour views are good, but there isn’t much food within a few minutes’ walk.

Studios and suites

Rooms come in two main types, with city or harbour views. The interiors take their colour palette from Vermeer. Every unit has a kitchen with a dishwasher, cooktop, microwave, full-size fridge-freezer, cookware and dishes.

Rooms also have a 43-inch smart TV with screen casting, a desk, air conditioning and soundproofing. Connecting suites are available if you’re travelling as a group. Several guests say the kitchen is more of a kitchenette: fine for breakfast or simple dinners, but not set up for serious cooking. The hotel can also have groceries delivered to your suite.

Pool, gym and shared facilities

The pool, sauna and gym are the main reason to pick this hotel over a plain serviced apartment. The shared facilities include:

• A heated indoor pool and sauna, free for guests. Marriott lists the hours as 7:00 am–9:00 pm, while Expedia says pool access runs until 10:00 pm.
• A 24-hour gym with cardio machines, free weights and TRX, plus locker rooms. Beauty treatments are available on request.
• A self-service laundry room, which is useful on long stays.
• The Grab ‘n Go Market in the lobby, open 24/7, for snacks and basics.
• Bike rental for €18, which is often the quickest way to get to the Jordaan and the canal ring.

Breakfast, bar and Lars

A hot buffet breakfast is included with every stay. It runs from 7:00 to 10:00 on weekdays and from 8:00 to 11:00 at weekends. Reviewers generally say it’s good, though a few long-stay guests find it repetitive after a week or so.

The Residence Inn Bar serves food and drinks all day from a rooftop spot overlooking the harbour. Residence Inn shares its building with Moxy Amsterdam Houthavens, so you can also use the Moxy Bar and its terrace next door.

For a special dinner, Lars Amsterdam is on the first floor of the same building at Danzigerkade 179. Chef Lars Scharp opened it in 2018, and it won a Michelin star in 2022 for French cooking with Asian influences. It serves lunch Thursday to Saturday and dinner Tuesday to Saturday, and it’s closed on Sunday and Monday. You’ll need to book.

Houthavens and nearby sights

Houthavens means “timber harbours”. For about a century, Scandinavian wood was stored here. The area is now one of Amsterdam’s newest residential neighbourhoods, built as seven islands with canals between them. It’s part of the Westerpark district. Expect new apartment blocks, floating homes and the large Pontsteiger building that spans the water, with ships passing on the IJ. Construction is still going on, and some streets are still being finished.

Walk under the dike and you reach the Spaarndammerbuurt, where Museum Het Schip and its Amsterdam School housing blocks are about 2 km by road. Westerpark and the Westergasfabriek cultural complex are about the same distance. They’re good for a morning run or an evening at the cinema, markets or restaurants in the old gasworks. The Jordaan is a short bike ride south.

Getting to the hotel

• From Amsterdam Centraal: take bus 48 (Marriott also lists 248), which serves Houthavens. Guests report the ride takes 10–15 minutes and the bus runs about every 15 minutes. By car or taxi it’s about 6 minutes.
• From Amsterdam Sloterdijk: Marriott lists bus 222.
• From Schiphol Airport (about 18 km): take the train to Amsterdam Centraal and switch to bus 48. The hotel doesn’t run a shuttle, but it can book an electric taxi for €72 one way or €100 return.
• By car: the covered on-site garage costs €4 per hour or €35 per day, and height limits apply. Q-Park Westergasfabriek, 0.3 km away, is the backup. EV charging is available but depends on availability.

One reviewer said that when the ninth-floor reception desk was unstaffed, a sign sent guests to the Moxy reception on the ground floor. If you’re arriving late, contact the hotel beforehand. Third-party listings ask guests arriving after 10:00 pm to let the hotel know in advance.

Pets, accessibility and sustainability

Pets: only dogs are allowed. The fee is €30 per night, with up to two dogs per room and a maximum weight of 25 kg each. Guide and assistance dogs stay free. Expedia also lists a €30-per-night pet deposit, so ask whether it applies to your booking.

Sustainability: the published measures are modest but specific. Marriott lists in-room recycling and EV charging, and Expedia lists a food-waste policy plus vegan and vegetarian dining options. The hotel is smoke-free.
